i've done the auto to tranny swap, and looking back on it, i've done a lot harder stuff... it's obviously not as easy as an oil change, but it's not rocket science, either.
i did it back in april with a friend who did it to his car. he knew next to nothing about cars, but decided to figure it out cuz he couldn't afford the replacement automatic tranny.
this isn't a job you should take on by yourself if you have a concerns about being able to do it. you should have at least one friend to help you, just so you don't get discouraged. taking the auto out is easy, but can be messy. putting the manual in is a little tricky, but not impossible. the odds and ends might be overwhelming if you don't have help.
as for cost, i got the parts for just under $800, but that included an ACT clutch assembly, tranny, stock flywheel, shift linkage, short-throw shifter, and all the little odds and ends, most of which you should get with the engine swap. granted, this was on a 1995 EX... was it worth it? YES!!!
i had over a dozen people that i went to school with (auto tech program) that told me i should just sell my car and buy a manual if i wanted one that bad. too bad i was too attached to my car to do it that way. i left school the last day before spring break with an automatic, skipped the first day back, and drove my manual back the next day. and it cost a lot less and was less of a headache than selling and buying a new car. IT ISN'T THAT BAD OF A JOB!!! get a mechanically inclined friend and a good service manual...and good luck!
