Would throwing a turbo N1 apexi muffler on a NA car be a mistake........
I really want the bigger cannister version of the N1 muffler, but i'm not sure if going from my 2.25 inch mide pipe to the 80mm inlet on the muffler is too big of a difference.....would it make a difference on performance in a negative way??? I think the bigger tip looks more aggressive and appealing, but would it be better performance wise to go with the 60 mm inlet version with the smaller tip....any info would be appreciated.
hope this helps

Some of the pulses will bounce around, causing exhaust gasses to hang around in the exhaust pipe with little forward motion. These gasses are susceptible to being sucked back into the combustion chamber on the piston's intake stroke, diluting the fresh air/fuel mixture and ultimately causing power loss. So while you have minimized backpressure even further with an over-sized pipe, you did so at the price of disorganizing the exhaust pulses. </TD></TR></TABLE>

Thanks for the info, I wonder if by only oversizing the inlet of the muffler, and not the entire piping, I won't create the problems noted. Anyone else have opinions???
anyone have an idea if the turbo muffler would sound any different than the NA version. Apexi makes catbacks with 2.5 inch inlets on the bigger canister mufflers, if only they would have just had universal 2.5 inlet N1 mufflers with the bigger tip.....
your best bet is just get the smaller n/a muffler..the turbo muffler will sound gross on your car...plus welding the bigger muffler to your small piping will be dirty...
the larger muffler would sound gross in comparison. I'd really like to put the bigger muffler on, does anyone else have opinions???

read the quote again, not only you'll lose performance, the impulsive exhaust would also create funny sound
hmm, i don't see why it would create a bad sound....
if you look up some past N1 threads, i've posted sound clips of mine where i have USDM ITR b-pipe with the bigger sized N1 muffler. I love the sound (very deep) and haven't had any problems in the 1.5 years i've had it.

I've checked out previous threads via searching, and i haven't had much luck finding info on this particular question. I still think the quote refers to an oversized mid pipe, and not the muffler specifically, as far as the impulses getting all disorganized. *****this may be a silly question, but would there be anyway to sort of "fill" the inlet only of the muffler to allow a smoother transitionfrom mid pipe to muffler??
can you be more specific in not recommending it......I just want some concrete answers.
It won't be a big mistake. If you want the Turbo Muffler at the end of your exhaust, put the turbo muffler at the end of your exhaust. A 2.25" exhaust with a 3" muffler isn't going to kill your power, and it sounds completely normal.
The only reason why I can imagine anyone saying it would be a "mistake" is due to the turbo muffler being larger overall, and hanging lower than the N/A muffler.

thank you very much. I won't be lowering my car this year so the ride height is not an issue. There's just something about the bigger exhaust with te huge tip that is appealing. Right now I've got the I/H/E, but my intake and muffler are obx, so i'm looking for something better. I just won a new AEM cai on ebay, and i'd like to add a better muffler to go with my JG edelbrock pro-flo headers.
I'm looking to make my order today, if anyone else can comment it would be great.
um, i have a custom 3" exhaust and a DC 4-1 header.
i did have a jackson racing supercharger but sold it.
now im stuck with a 3" cat back exhaust with a stock motor with just intake header and a 3" exhaust and a stock muffler welded to it.
now, it is slower since i do not have the supercharger, but my car still sounds DEEP and throaty.
no tin can effect, just deep. not loud, just deep.
kinda like all bass with not treble.
i have no problems so far......
btw, my pipes are 3" and the pipe are kinda thick also.
most aftermarket exhaust pipes are really thin, which causes the tin can sound. and all that rattle noises.
such as, the pipe on the stock headers are really thick, while my DC headers are really THIN. causes easy denting.

Here's a couple pics of my Apexi N1 (turbo sized) on my 98 GSR. It's the colored "green" one but for the price they go for lately i can't complain, plus i plan on painting it flat black sometime.
See, color ain't too bad
BIG tip
