Default D16Y8 head on D16Z6 block. Headbolts?

Ok I am putting my 99 D16Y8 head on my 94 D16Z6 block since I am having to do a headgasket job on the Z6. What headbolts do I use on this swap? Also I am guessing the Y8 headgasket but I beileve all the D series gaskets are the same?

Nice, you will have the same setup as me!

Anyway, use the Y8 headgasket, it's the thinnest of all D-series out there, resulting in the highest CR. (you'll get about 9.6:1 with it)

The headbolts are kinda trickey, you actually need 2 Y8 headbolts, and the rest Z6 bolts. Install one Y8 headbolt in the back-left hole (just above the starter), then install the second Y8 headbolt in the back-right hole (just above #1 intake runner, t-belt side). The rest of the holes will use the Z6 headbolts. The reason behind this is that the Y8 headbolts are about .8" shorter than the Z6 bolts, and it just so happens that those two bolt holes on the Y8 head need the shorter bolts.

OEM headbolts can be found for cheap @ http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com

Which intake manifold are you going to use?

Well my car is Turbo so I am going to go ahead and use a thicker headgasket. either A6 or Z6. And I am using the Y8 mani. SO it goes....

Y8..Z6..Z6..Z6..Y8
Z6..Z6..Z6..Z6..Z6

Sorry if it is not understandable.

BTW just wondering? Where did you find this out at?

hey Mr. flat_blk... that is a great combo, but why the thicker head gasket? you can get as much power out of the stock headgasket with lower boost and it costs less if you blow the head gasket. just wondering.

Well I went ahead and got the Y8 gasket and now I am stumped on the distr. The damn thing will not start in the right firing order on the dizzy but will start with the number 2 and 4 wire swapped out? I put my GF's dizzy on and it runs the car perfect ( in the right order you know). What the hell could be the problem? I know I need another dizzy proably. So if you got one off a 92-95 CX,DX.or LX let me know.

Is your z6 head fucked or something? The z6 head is supposed to flow betterthan the y8, as apposed to the y8 IM flowing better.

He's not using a Z6 head. He has the Y8 head and a Z6 block - that's why he needed to mix and match the headbolts.

As for the distributor, I'm not understanding what's going on exactly. My A6 dizzy bolted up to the Y8 head perfectly, but I later on found out that the little rotor was installed backwards, so it wouldn't start. I turned the little rotor 180 degrees and it started right up! But you said you were only getting a spark on 2 & 4? Hmm... But it looks like you've already gotten that figured out w/the new dizzy.

I know that. When I first read it, it sounded like he was replacing his z6 head with a y8 head.

The Z6 head was old and krusty....Where as the y8 head was new can clean.

That is the reasoning behind the use of the head and also I blew the head gasket on the Z6 longblock.

Anyways. About the dizzy? ANy ideas?

I used the the
Y8 Z6 Z6 Z6 Y8
Z6 Z6 Z6 Z6 Z6

set-up for the head bolts.

ya but the Y8 head is a good head, and the combo you have is great, what is the order you have the wires on your distriburter?

I think you gonna have a big problem getting a distributor for that set-up unless you butcher up the Z6 distributor to fit...only other option I can think of is to go standalone with either a A6 or Y8 dist modded for a Pick-up

to get it running like this

12
34

but the correct order is

13
24

and about finding or butchering as you say. I can just use a CX,DX,or LX dizzy. But I found one..a CX one. well I found a whole other CX...LOL..I just bought a white 92 CX. Soon to be swapping in the Z6/Y8 turbo combo...

I don't know what to do with headstuds... I would assume you could get all Z6 studs to work/fit.

Good luck with the dizzy... I wish I could help you there, but I'm using my A6 distributor along with all of my other OBD-0 electronics. Thank goodness for Apex'i, I love my VAFC!

I just did this same head/block combination. The reason i did it was b/c i already had the Y8 head from a previous car p&p with a 3 angle valve job. I originally used all z6 head studs. I bought 10 of the Y8 ones but none of them were long enough. And b/c i ended up rebuilding my block i just went ahead and installed arp (z6) head studs. As for the dist., i am using a 97 civic ex one repinned for the two plugs instead of just the one.

8 out of the 10 studs will work,If you dont want to mix and match studs with bolts(I wouldnt) I think ARP just came out with a Y8 Head Stud Kit so you will have to try and buy just 2 studs out of that kit(if thats possible ) or buy the whole kit and have 8 extra studs lying around afterwards..Other option is you could just get 3 extra ARP washers(I know you can buy these seperate from the kit,I did from summit racing) and use 1 extra on the left rear stud and 2 extra on the right rear stud.
