Default what is offset?

i was wondering what offset. here's my take on it, please let me know if this is correct. off set is the amount the rim is made to stick out when installed on the car. the higher the number, the outer it goes.

i am asking because on my car, the 2 wheels on the right side are flush with the side of the car, and on the left side, the tires are not flush with the car, and actually go in more. hope u guys understand what im saying.

my theory as to why its doing this because, maybe the rims came with 2 different offsets, and somehow i mixed it up. hopefully thats the case. last time i took my wheels off, the front passenger side had i believe 37 on it, i didnt chekc the rest of the wheels.

anyways, if thats the case, what do you guys suggest i do, put the tires that stick more out of the car in the back or in the front, im thinking putting them in the back might be better.

thanks

The offset of a wheel is the distance from its hub mounting surface to the centerline of the wheel. The offset can be one of three types.

Zero Offset
The hub mounting surface is even with the centerline of the wheel.

Positive
The hub mounting surface is toward the front or wheel side of the wheel. Positive offset wheels are generally found on front wheel drive cars and newer rear drive cars.

Negative
The hub mounting surface is toward the back or brake side of the wheels centerline. "Deep dish" wheels are typically a negative offset.

Props to tirerack.com where i buy all my tires. The problem you have may be attributed to having two different sized tires on each side. check the tire sizes then let us know.

the thing is, all my tires are 195 50 15.

the 2 in the front were changed at the same time, however, the backs are different brands.
since the front two are the same i dont see how it could make the wheels flush and nonflush with the car that way.

i really believe it might be that i got rims with 2 sets of offsets. i wont know until i take them off and check it out i guess, maybe tonight or tomoro!

if that is the case tho, which should i put in the back, im thinking about the one with more positive offset, so the back ones would slightly stick out more outta the car than the front ones, thanks alot NYC
