Default Getting a turbo next week, I need to know what to look for...

Hi my cousin is getting a turbo next week, a guy is selling whole kit it says "Turbo has very minor shaft play. Wastegate, FMU and blow off valve are new. Intercooler and the piping is in functional condition. Piping will fit a LS or type" I just want to make sure because we are not that familiar with turbos, he selling it for 1700? is there anything i should be aware of?

minor shaft play is normal in a used turbo. The compressor wheel will stabalize as oil is pressurized into the center cartridge. If the fins touch the walls of the compressor then that's a definate sign to rebuild, or if the fins move in and out. A pieced together kit is as good, if not better then a turbo kit from Greddy, RevHard, Fmax, etc. What you should be looking at, besides the condition of the turbo, is manifold design, wastegate, and wastegate spring, injectors, intank fuel pump, and fuel management. If the turbo setup incorporates a FMU + inline fuel pump on stock injectors you would want to invest in a better fuel management setup. OH! let me remind you most turbo kits out there, like RevHard, incorporate the FMU + inline fuel pump for fuel delivery. big NO NO in my book....it's a shot in the dark and will probably give you bad gas mileage and will be too rich. Remember Rich or Lean your engine will be running higher than usual EGT temps which will obviously ruin your engine. FUEL MANGAMENT and FUEL DELIVERY should be your number one concern....TUNE TUNE TUNE.

A BlowOff Valve and the Intercooler will ruin your chance of passing smog. That's why the basic Greddy Kit doesn't include a Intercooler or a BOV and only boosts 5-6psi. anything above that and your running into detonation issues.....but you will need a Intercooler for sure. Even at 5-6psi you may run into detonation issues with the changing temperatures

First off i wouldn't buy it. How many miles are on it looks ragged out. Also is the $1,700 for only what is pictured? If so then your cousin is getting screwed. I didnt see a fuel pump or oil lines, are they included?

He can piece together a brand new kit for about $2000-2300 depending on your connections and ability to negotiate. Or he can piece together a"better" used kit for the same price he's paying here.

Custom kits are better IMO, the guy who's selling it didn't do all that bad on parts, good turbo, good wastegate (which is the most critical part, IMO), good BOV.
Revhard, greddy.. All of them have something about the kits i don't like.

Here's a breakdown to give you an idea.
Keep in mind this is a good setup if your on a budget.

Garrett 57 trim t3/t04e $500-$540 brand new
Revhard manifold $325 *used*
Tial 35mm $200 *new* got mine for $175 new
Bov $170-180 new I got greddy type S $179 shipped
Piping/couplers/clamps $175-200 Jc Whintey or you can buy my piping for $215 shipped
Downpipe $200-$225
Walbro fuel pump 255 $90
Flamenco-T Oil line kit $130
Fmic $325 Ebay Boostcoolers, I got a precision FMIC for $350

Thats a little over 2,200 with all new parts except the manifold and you'll have to decide what you want for fuel management.

You could put this same kit together with used parts except i would buy a new Turbo and probably knock off another $300 dollars. You get the idea tell your cousin to do ore research and look for better deals instead of jumping on this deal.

HEY Thats my turbo kit up for sale BUY BUY BUY!

https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=561200

It came off my friends car. The shaft play is normal if its a tiny bit side to side. In and out shaft play is the bad kind. This turbo does not do that. And yes, the piping fits an LS.

And no, Im not trying to "screw" anyone. Its a good kit with all good parts. The intercooler is double the size of a drag or revhard, the turbo is good, manifold is good due to good wastegate placement and stainless steel, piping looks a little ghetto, but it works.
