I did a lot of research on radar detectors and it seems that the Beltronics BEL985 and Escort 8500 are the best for the money (200-350). If you have dollars to burn then the valentine 1 is the best money can buy.
All of these have one thing in common with the cheapest detector.......nothing can stop instant on and Laser.....unles they nail someone ahead of you and your radar picks it up.

I agree. After reading the reviews on radartest.com and radar-detectors.com I opted for the Escort Passport 8500. Excellent performance, highly recommend this one. There are others out there that perform to this standard also.

I use the Escort 8500 too. Though they just came out with a cool wireless escort thats like the same thing only battery operated.
Though all the rich ****** in my town with their Porches and M5s use the "Valentine One".
I stoped using a radar detector, because the only time I speed is on the highway here.

Actually thr cordless Escort didn't get great reviews.
I got the Bel985. I didn't really like the silver of the passport.
But basically they perform about equal it just depends on were you get the best deal.
I got mine for 215 shipped.

Yup that and Laser.
Its good for police still using KA, no instant on technology or for when someone else gets nailed when the radar does go off you know there is a speed trap somewhere in the area.

Escort 8500 for me. I haven't had a radar detector in a couple years and I got a super good deal on this one so I couldn't pass it up. I figure since trying to get myself to slow down wasn't doing much good a radar detector might help. Now I just need to pick up the laser jammer for it and I'll be set.

Jammers don't do ****.
Escorts are always a few dollars higher then the BEL's.
Valentine 1's are about 400 after shipping and everything and you can only buy it from the manufacter.

Depends on the state, county, etc.
Its really hard to say what all police usee. laser is the most expensive. Instant on is usually used by state troopers.
Regular Ka is used mostly by city and county police.

What about here in Toronto/GTA? Do you know what they use here?
I almost got nailed in Allan Rd. North the other day. They had the speed trap set-up and then another cop with radar ~1 km up the road.

Well I know they are illegal. So if you had one and they have a radar dectector dectector then they'll fine you for speeding and having an illegal dectection device.

i'm not rich, or a *****, so dont stereotype.
but i do own a Valentine 1.
i got it in june of '00, and i feel blind without it (which you'd think i'd get used to, seeing as my work commute puts me through DC and momentarily into NoVA -- the only 2 jurisdictions in the continental US where detectors are still illegal to use
).
i paid $430 shipped for it, brand new from valentine 1.
try eBay for a used one -- i've heard that they go for between $225-$300 depending on age and condition.
i will say this -- it really works well -- very, very few falses from other detectors (something my old BEL used to get a lot), in fact i've discovered that the falses i -do- get are ironically from other V1s.
yes, i still pick up automatic door openers/alarm systems nearby, but they're on the same damn frequencies (X and K).
i have to say the best feature is the multiple count and the location indicator, still something none of the others have, to my knowledge. it truly makes the experience better.
my attitude is that you get what you pay for, and when you want to speed (a lot, like me), you want the best coverage you can have.
bottom line: in the 3 years i've had it, i've taken it on multiple trips to Bar Harbor, ME and Atlanta, GA and numerous trips to the DE/MD beaches and it's hasn't failed me yet.

The differences between Valentine and all the rest is the multiple bogey counter and the direction the signal is coming from.
The Escort and Bel top of line don't have as many falses anymore either.
The V1 is a great radar though.
