Default D-series cam shaft – is it worth it in an EJ?

I've got a ’98 EX coupe with I/H/E. I use it as my daily driver. I'd like to get a different cam, but I don't want to upgrade my valvetrain and I don't plan on doing an OBD1 harness swap for Hondata for an increased redline. So if I just dropped a different cam in (ZEX, Webb, Crower, Gude, or whatever), am I going to notice any real difference in power or should I just save my money? Do I have to upgrade my valvetrain with a new cam?

While I can't provide a specific cam referral for you, you can find a cam that works with OE valvetrain and redline. Remember that no cam is drop-in. Get a cam gear and tune it on the dyno. With your current I/H/E set-up and a cam added, you may be looking at fuel issues so some form of fuel management be it piggyback or standalone is advised.

Very generic answer I know...but better then saying "do a search"

Really? Fuel management for a SOHC all-motor setup? Would a FPR be good enough? I know the two bottom-end ZEX came will work with stock valvetrain as long as you don't go past the redline (which would be hard to do with the stock ECU).

More than the issue above, I'm concerned that I'll pay x-amount of money and hardly get any gains because I don't have the Hondata and didn't replace the valvetrain.

Fuel will probably needed to be added in areas and taken away in others. A FPR adds or subtracts fuel across the entire rpm range only. You would probably be better off with a AFC or VAFC since you can control specifc rpm points across the range.

I would expect minimal gains from just bolting stuff on. The thing to remember is that everything you do must work together as a system collectively. Tuning is the key to this!

On the ZEX OEM valvetrain cam I have seen 15whp with minor tuning.

As advised cam gear, VAFC and fpr at the minimum.....the dyno is expensive so why limit your tuning options when your paying 75-125 an hour?

125-130whp should be about right with I/h/E and cam with tuning.....pretty dam close to B16 hp without the cost and you can always strip the parts off and sell them later....not a bad idea for a daily.

Which zex cam was it? The 5100 or the 5300 (assuming it was a Y8 head)?
