I wouldnt pay more than 1000 unless it has a perfect body... The Dx is the base model with the 1.5L motor... Smoke is never good... But the rattling is prolly a heat shield... But the Dx isnt much of a value unless you are planning to do a swap, but you are still only paying for the chasis...

First of all, check http://www.kbb.com for the value of this car. Then draw your own conclusions from there.

Second, the 'smoke' you saw, if it was while the A/C was on, was probably just condensation. The air coming from the A/C vents is usually about 23*F on a Honda, MUCH below the dew point of damn near anywhere this time of year. You were basically seeing a cloud being formed if the A/C was on.

Third, any 'rattle' you hear is usually minor. 'Clunking' noises will usually require replacement of expensive parts. However, if the clunking is coming from select suspension parts (blown struts, worn our bushings) you can usually get the car for a steal and the bad parts won't matter because they'll be replaced when you do a big brake upgrade/full poly kit install/new struts and springs install.

It all hinges on the condition of the body. Given the fact that practically nobody keeps stock engines anyway these days AND stock engines are cheap if you want one, smoke from the tailpipe is no big deal if the body and interior are in great shape. But do try to talk them down.
