Default Shaving tires

I'm contemplating getting a set of Kumho V700's for the upcoming HPDE at VIR (provided I can shake enough change out of the couch ) Kumho recommends shaving these to 3/32 for dry track use. I will be ordering these on-line and having them mounted locally. Does anyone know a place in the Washington DC area that can shave these to the necessary depth?

Thanks!

Mike

Paul, at Radial Tire in Silver Spring, shaves the ones he sells, but I don't know about just mounting & shaving ones you got elsewhere.

If not shaved, in hot/dry conditions, they can chunk and melt.

Yea What RJ said. Especially the Ecsta, the Victoracer I have heard you can get by without shaving. My Ecsta were shaved and they never chunked or pealed. IF you get them from tirerack they will ship them shaved for $15 per tire.

4/32 is fine... especially for HPDEs.

If overdriven they will.

I took my tires to Curry's Auto in VA. They didn't charge a whole lot compared to other shops and they did a great job.

Get a razor and do it yourself. no one likes tires with a beard. I say, "Shave'em 'til they bleed"

Yes, most online places that sell the tires will shave them for you before shipping. For a fee, of course.

What do you mean by this in relation to full tread kumhos? Just curious, because rain tires (full tread kumhos for example) will suffer if overdriven. And by overdriven in this case I mean driving on them at a normal "dry" pace, as opposed to deliberately taking it easier on them in the case of accidentally being stuck out there on full treads.

In a hpde setting using a shaved DOT race tire is not the best plan IMO... but the poster asked where he could get them shaved... and I can't help.

By 'overdriven' I mean that even a shaven tire will chunk if abused on a dry track... but it will take more abuse than a full tread tire.

Kumho sells DOT legal tires. You should be able to (and can) install them and drive them without shaving/heat cycling. You mileage will vary.

Rain tires will will suffer b/c they are designed to retain/generate more heat than a DOT dry tire. IFAIK Kumho does not sell a wet tire.

From tire rack:
The ECSTA V700 must be shaved to 3/32" - 4/32" tread depth for any autocross or track use in the dry.

Kumho advises that the ECSTA V700 DOT-legal competition radial must be shaved prior to use in dry conditions. If this tire is not shaved, excessive wear may occur causing the tire to wear to the cords prematurely in a localized area.

Tire heat cycling will not prevent the excessive localized wear of full tread depth tires but will continue to enhance the tire consistency and wear on shaved tires.

The ECSTA V700 should only be used at full tread depth (6/32") for wet track and wet autocross use.

Why don't they just make the tires with 3-4/32" tread depth, so they don't need shaving?

I believe the Hoosier r3s03 is something like that and it does not need to be shaved for a dry track.

Willard, the full tread V700 (or I would assume the ecstas too but haven't personally seen it used yet) is used as rain tires, as are full tread toyo ra1s. In theory you could drive on a dry track on a dirt stocker if you're going easy enough. It doesn't say anywhere you can't. A full tread kumho could be driven harder of course in the dry, but there’s a point where it's better to just run shaved tires (or something with less/no tread) on a dry track to prevent the tire from overheating that will quickly chew it up.
