First Impression: Toda VTEC Killer Camshaft
*sigh* Long day for me.
8:52am
Strolls in to work a little late and have a chance to stop by my car where Drew is working on it. I see some funnel contraption on the radiator cap where some fluid is in it. Hrm...mad scientist at work I'm assuming. Exchange a few words and go clock in.
9:30am
Peeking out the glass window I can see most of the mechanics just standing around my car just shittin around doing nothing. So I think what the hell. Walk outside and grab my Hondata S200. I open the sucker up and plug the basemap socket in it along with the wires to run to the blue box. Take it back out to the car and leave it in there.
10:40am
There's a loud flapping noise coming from the service bay. I'm in the back parts counter taking some Honda-Tech parts order. I think nothing of it.
11:30am
I walk to the window again and I see smoke coming my exhaust pipe. I'm like "
" my car's running! I run out to the bay like a little school girl. My car is fighting to idle right. Put, put, put, flap, put, put, put, flap...bwaaamm...bam....put, put, put. LoL. It was the craziest thing I've ever heard. This is with the factory exhaust hooked up by the way. Drew walks over to me and says, "Cars not Idling right." So I say to him, "What's wrong?" Drew responds, "Um...Hondata has a VTEC CEL on." "What does that mean," I said. "Well, It really doesn't know what the **** is going on right now," laughter breaks out. We pause, listen to the car some more. "Damn this bitch sounds mean," I said. I walk back into the parts department with a big grin on my face.
So the day goes by and every now and then Drews cranking up the car just to see it Idle and doing last minute inspection before I take it home to start breaking it in. The car refused to Idle and we had no choice but to adjust the throttle cable. But there's a catch. There's always a catch. With the throttle cable adjusted all the way, the car idled at 500rpms. Heh...thought we accomplished something. Wrong, we created a new problem. With the throttle cable so tight, it sticks. LoL. We would have to place our foot underneath the gas pedal and pull it towards us. Hahah...Not a problem. Or so I thought.
It's almost time to go home and Drew insist on me driving it around the parking lot and getting used to it. By this time, our clothing is covered with residue from the exhaust fumes and the entire shop smells like gasoline. I take it around a couple times, getting used to it and shifting and what not.
Finally time to go home. Ooops...forgot to check the gas tank. When I last checked the gas tank, which was last night, it was about a mark under the middle mark. Just idling and cruising around the parking lot and my car is at "E." WTF!?
Drive to the gas station and no problem. Fill it up with good ol' 93 Octane. Still no problem. I'm headed home and take a back way home. I'm thinking to myself, man this should be alot of fun. I come to a steep hill with a stop sign at it's peak. Thoughts of no power under 5,000rpms quickly fills my mind. I rev it to 2,000 and the car doesn't move. Heh...rev it to 3,000 and still won't move. I'm trying to keep it under revs here now. LoL. I let the car roll back down the hill and try to get a running start and run the stop sign! hahahaha...still not enough speed and the car will abosutely die as it reaches the top of the hill. I'm like WTF? I step on the brakes. Guess what? Not enough vacuum. No power brakes! WTF!?!? I'm thinking to myself, how is this thing streetable? I give Drew a call on his Cell phone and he quickly makes a U-Turn and comes to rescue me.
As I sit there in the car with the fumes seeping into the cockpit, I'm reminded of a time when my buddy's ITR was not running right. I said to myself, "Len, what the **** did you get yourself into? You don't even have your Toda ITBs yet!!" At this point, I'm so frustrated that I just want to throw in the towel and quit. But something is telling me not to quit. As of right now, I only have one goal, 12 secs on street tire All Motor. That's all I can focus on and that's the only thing that's keeping me going. That's all my Best Friend, Matt, ever talked about. And if I could do it, it would finally allow me to close a chapter in my life and move on.
*sigh*
I will have videos up tomorrow along with pictures of it inside the car. It looks like I won't be installing my Toda ITBs until I get my EMS in. Just more obstacles to pass. One day though, I'll be idling like Chris at 750rpms.
One day.
Thanks for reading guys,
Len

Thanks Leo,
If it wasn't for you, I wouldn't be where I am right now. You've always been there for me, like always, although we did run into some problems here and there.
But that's just normal. Thanks for wishing me good luck.

Correction. That is just Tech. Drew has been building engines for a while now, why he's working at Acura is a long story. I do not trust anyone to touch my motor except for him. I haven't doubted him and I don't plan on it. Sure it's a lot of money invested. Sure Steve can get it done in 30 minutes. But I'm to the point where I just want to do most of it on my own. What's the fun if I can't learn? Most of you guys did not wake up with the knowledge one day. If it wasn't through trial/error/experience, you wouldn't be where you are today. One day I can look back at the stupid **** I've done and laugh. But hey, the experience is something that will always be there. But the more people doubt me, the more I want to prove them wrong. I'll get my ******* motor running right and I'll eventually hit my goal. I could care less what other people thought about it. It's my money and my car.

Len..... i hate you.

Let me hear it idle y0. I might be up there tomorrow for some parts.
Dude, congrats on all of it. I hope you get it running correctly. It's sorta inspiring me to get off my *** to put my CTR pistons in.
Anyways, props and enjoy it. I cant wait to see the it in person.

No I'm not doing that. I'm just making the car more fun to drive for me and maybe alittle bet of beast in it. Not going to out-do anyone anymore. If it was two years and four months ago yes.

good times len, its gonna be frustrating at times and make you want to kill things but just be patient and it will all fall into place soon. the EMS is key

Definitely. I just ordered my EMS with the UEGO Controller. Should allow me to do alot of messing around. Oddly enough that's how I got a friend of mine's car to run. I hope version 1.0 isn't too different from the .89 like I was used to. I remember first impressions on that EMS. We had absolutely no help whatsoever. No matter how many people we tried to call, no one could help us because it was so new. But I managed to play with it for a while and to the point where I got it to idle properly. Still amazed by that.
It's been a year now and I know version 1.0 is out and with a vengance. Should be a much more solid unit. I always had problems with the com failure with the older one. *sigh*

Version 1 is not out yet. It was released with BRAND NEW units only and only for Supras, but they stopped releasing it. They are still working on a few bugs, the main problem thus far is they arent able to convert old version files (.089, .094, etc) to the new version 1.0 without major complications to the old maps. So if you were to run the 1.0 version, you would have to start from scratch. It is supposed to be A LOT easier than previous versions, for example, all the parameters and maps needed to adjust idle will open together when you want to change idle parameters and you wont have to search around and find different menus and maps and open them separately like the older versions in order to adjust idle. They call the new menus "wizards". if you havent already, you need to check out http://www.aempower.com and get into the EMS forums, I have learned a shitload of info on there. As soon as I get the w/b Ill begin making changes to try and correct some of my current problems. The potential of the system is nearly unlimited and always progressing, it just takes lots of time and messing around to get things right. Also, I gotta say, with my all motor setup so far, its has been a BITCH to get right. The car seems to be very picky and Im far from running perfect and it makes driving the car a pain in the *** sometimes. When you first experience "tip in hesitation" and "bucking" you will know what I mean. Let me know if you have any questions and we might be able to help each other out.
