Salvaged Type R value...
I am going to look at an R that appearantly sustained some "light" front end damage. I just spoke with the guy on the phone very briefly, here are the basics:
Y2K type R
Black on black
30k on the car
estimated $3k worth of damage( fenders, bumper, radiator)
He is looking for about 12 grand
Car has a MA salvage title
...just looking for your thoughts on price and the glaring fact that it has a salvage title. My only thought is, considering what nice, low mileage R's are going for, this one might not have a terribly low resale value if it was fixed properly.

Is the salvage title from a previous accident?</TD></TR></TABLE>thats what Im saying. A friend of mine has 13,000 dollars worth of damage to his Type R just 5 mos. ago..and they still fixed it
The car is at a dealership (used car)...like i said i didnt speak with the guy long because I' rather just see it and talk to him in person than have him sugarcoat it over the phone.
Salvage titles are this plain.... If you intend to keep the car forever and track/ or just beat around in then they are not that bad but if you want to get a cheap R and try and fix it and resell it you are wasting your time. Salvage cars are worth close to half the book value even if fixed by an A1 shop. I work in the autobody buisness and out of maybe 50 cars 1 person may opt to buy from their insurance. Its all up to what your intentions for the car is.
I bought my car salvaged for 19,000 with 8K on the clock. the car ended up getting broken into and the whole interior stolen and the insurance company totalled the car with 34K on the clock. they gave me 19,500 for its value, not including the stuff I added.
THe guy either lied about the amount of damage, or it was salvaged due to a previous wreck. They would not total this car for 3k worht of damage. It sounds fishy to me I would skip this one and keep lookiong for a better deal on a more solid ITR. Salvage title cars are hard to sale and if the car gets stolen your insurance co will only pay you the ACV of a salvaged ITR. So once again u will egt shafted there.
The only salvage car i would consider buying is maybe an theft recovery, ex they steal seats, rims, car = totaled thats a different story.

i do rebuildables on the side. clear and salvage titles. there are no set values for salvaged titled/rebuilt/salvage history cars. you get what people will pay for them. they can be worth as much as 80-85% of the cars retail value with a clear title. they aren't that hard to sell at all. remember, there is a huge, huge market out there (people who aren't online) for selling salvaged titled cars.
$3k in damage to the itr could have been what the body shop spent. that usually relates to double or more what a normal customer would pay.
remember, depending on which insurance company the value does not always have to be a certain percentage to total the car. plenty of insurance companies will not deal with frame damaged cars. meaning, the car has frame damage and they'll total it. i've seen this plenty and plenty of times. small bend in the frame rail or replacement of which isn;'t expensive at all.
with the newer laser guided frame machines cars can easily be fixed back to oem specs or better.
most people on a weboard such as ht.com are scared of salvaged cars. but if the car is fixed correctly you should have no problems. just make sure you have a body guy look at the car.
if you don't buy it, let me know where this dealer is because 12k for a rebuilt itr is a good deal especially for a 2000 year model.
