I bought an ex head awhile back, it's complete with the all the way to the valve cover. I thought I'd throw in a cam, have it ported and polished, maybe some bigger valves, etc... and I want to swap it onto my hx motor. Is there anything else I need to do before I perform this swap? Will my ecu work or will I have to get one for the ex? I plan on getting other stuff like the tb and intake manifold and do it all together.

get an ex ecu. it should be plug and play. get an ex tranny too, that'll make a pretty nice difference.

Thanks a lot. When I take the head off I'm gonna have the pistons and rings looked at to see what they look like. When I got the car it had just under 70,000 miles and now has 130,000 but still runs great and doesn't burn or leak any oil, the 5 speed still shifts like when I bought it. I plan on swapping motors eventually but I don't know when that will be and this is my only car I have and gotta have something to drive. I enjoy getting 40+ mpg though
especially with the way gas keeps going up. I want to make sure I get all the parts I need so I can have it done in a weekend. anyways I know that most of the differences between the ex and hx are in the head and when the vtec kicks in, but what about the bottom end?

if you get the ex tranny to go with the head be prepared for a mileage drop. i get around 35 mpg on my d16y8 swap. still not too bad. the bottom end is exactly the same between the ex and hx. they're both vtec blocks. the engine code is obviously different, but that's because of the head. the block is exactly the same. be sure to torque down the head bolts to the current specs and tighten them in the right order.

I'll reuse my tranny till I get a new clutch then I'll swap it out and get new axles too. Last couple times I've had my car at the honda dealer they keep telling me about the cv boots so I'm just gonna replace the axles. Also I have another question... when I goto use the ex ecu the wiring for the o2 sensor is 4 wires, the hx is 5. Is 4 of the wires the same and can I clip it and splice on a 4 wire plug and install a 4 wire o2 sensor? or do I have to run some wires directly to the ecu? Right now I plan on using the stock exhaust till I get some more money saved up. This would've been so much easier when my brother was gonna give me his 99 ex motor to swap in
but anyways... what did you swap your d16y8 into?

i have no idea about the o2 wires. do a search because i know it's been discussed before. i swapped the y8 into my 97 hatch. i switched over all the wiring so i wouldn't need to worry about stuff like that
