Default Black smoke when on the gas, what ya think?

When ever I'm giving it alot of gas in most gears I see a trail of black smoke coming out from the car. I know its do to running rich but I have not changed anything for it cause this.

The car feels ok and drives fine but the smoke is very noticable when going hard.

Any thoughts?

First thing that comes to mind is carbon deposits.

It means you let it sit too long between hard drives.

I was thining the same as MK - carbon deposits/running rich.

Chris - who can blacken a rear bumper (and bottomside of the wing) in no time...

Oh so I have to keep it floored all the time, even when I'm sleeping?

MMM..... driving it hard more often, now thats going to be a task

But really, thats all ya think it is? nothing more like needing a tune up, dirty oil or something wrong?

Well, you could always change the oil and run some fuel system cleaner through it and see.

Good idea. get some Neutra (made by schaeffer's). Great stuff, and can be used in the gas tank to clean the fuel system and in the crankcase/oil to help get rid of deposits, etc.

I dont know if it had anything to do with my gas mileage, but from the first time I used Neutra till now (still using it), my MPG's have been averaging 28.5, I used to get about 25.. pre-Neutra. I can't say for sure that Neutra was the only thing helping out, but it is an odd coincidence, don't you think?

The standard oil eating rate One quart every 1000 miles of hard driving- and yes I use Mobile 1 5/30 sometimes 10/30 but thats rare.

Why what are you thinking D?

my brother has the same problem with his itr, its like when u get into vtec its like a smoke screen behind the car that can be seen from a distance, also, there is a large amount of carbon deposits that cover the rear bumper and even the wing. ive been keeping track of the oil consumption this week under normal driving conditions and it has burned 1/4 of a quart of oil in 50 miles . we recently did a comp. check and the numbers were fine and also a leakdown test was done that came up with like 6% 4% 5% 5% from 1-4. also, we replaced the pcv valve. any ideas on what could be the problem? it used to have toda c's in it but before he bought it they were swapped out for stock itr cams. it has 64,xxx miles on it and has hardly ever been driven in the past year.....say once every two weeks. it was smoking ever since we got it thought. could it just be that its not being driven enough or what? thanks

If it isn't blue smoke, then it isn't burning oil.
Maybe you do have a slight consumption problem (i'm talking oil here!!), I don't know, but black smoke is from running rich and spitting out all that burnt up, unused fuel.

How noticeable is it Rob? With my test pipe on, I shoot out a much larger black cloud at WOT in the upper rpm ranges, but not so much with the cat on.

Regane Fuel Injector Cleaner ...as suggested by a rather well-respected tuner on here.

If not that, you're running rich for some reason.

Ok let me say this and you tell me what you think.

Last night I was cruising and a IS300 pulled up to my door (on highway) then got behind me and I took off.

I'm still not sure if I beat him or scared him by the smoke that shot out at his car, but I was well ahead at the end of that short strech.

Yeah I was doing the bad thing- Messing on the streets

don't honda engines...primarily the vtec motors, run rich to prevent detonation??

I know my Lude does the same thing you describe, and it runs fine...better than running lean I suppose.
