What does everyone use? I used clear packing tape but it has now discolored. I have tons of vinyl sitting around. would that work ?

And what color goes well with a red car?

Red vinyl from a sign shop - take 'em your gas cover (two bolts) and ask them to match the paint color.

Sure, racers tape, duct tape, packaging tape, vinyl ... you are only trying to prevent the shards from coming apart when they break. The matching vinyl just looks better IMO.

 

They aren't using duct tape. It's "racers' tape," which looks and feels a lot like duct tape but doesn't leave a mess or peel off your paint when removed.

3M painter's tape in blue. 2" wide so it covers quick. Looks good on a red car, stays on fine, and comes off easy with no mess.

 

Whatever masking tape I got,, white, blue, whatever. (I got me some white tape in my avatar.)

 

Do not believe I have ever seen a race car with painters tape on the headlights or markers.

 

Your best option is to get some vinyl in the color of your choice. I picked up some from a local shop. It was cheap and I think it looks much better than strips of "racers tape".

green and red are good!!!! I have to echo what everyone else has said to this point. Pretty much any type of tape should suffice. Who cares what it looks like, it's a race car.

Ahhh, so that was you who was in H5 - I wondered if it was the same as the H-T member. Wish I had been there.

Got my new ecu guys, hope to make it to VIR, definitely will be at Lowes.

Oh yeh - us old school pup-up headlight havin' guys don't have exposed headlights. Hee hee. But I figure I still need them taped to they're covered with white vinyl.

BTW - that 3M painters tape is specially low-tack so it wont damage a painted surface when removed (we're talking house paint, not the automotive stuff that's really well adhered) - hence, if your headlights ever get broken/shattered, that stuff has so little adhesive strength that it'll do virtually no good at all in holding the glass together and keeping shards from flying all over the track. You need something with a lot more tack, such as racer's tape or sheet vinyl. And don't worry about how easy it is to get off. If it's a race car, you shouldn't need to get it off, and if you're hpde just carry some mineral spirits with you to take any residue off the glass that might be left behind.

 

I wouldn't use vinyl if you plan on removing it. It's easy enough to take off, but not cost effective to cantinuous have to cut, remove, recut, etc...

I certainly do. A well turned out racecar is a matter of pride, respect, and can also be used as an intimidation factor. If this is a daily driver that you are going to just uncover the lights to drive home from the track then it is definately much less of an issue.

My first vote is vinyl as it looks the best and matches other elements on the car. If it is a real racecar, you'll likely never need to take it off (although it comes off easy) so expense doesn't really matter.

Next bet if you want a nice sheet and a solid basic color is acceptable is a roll of contact paper (not shelf paper). Big rolls are cheap at Wal-Mart, Home Depot, etc. and will last forever.

I don't care for tape much because it only comes in strips and up close it doesn't look as nice as sheet material. A sheet is a bit harder and more time consuming to lay nicely over compund curves on a light but it gets easier with practice just like stickering with no bubbles.

Personally I think the blue painter tape is just a step above tan masking tape or black electrical tape. Using tape for skinny, blocky car numbers is even worse IMO. The blue tape does have some color (if light blue crepe paper matches your color scheme) but it is cheap and I think it looks it. If you have 5 minutes to cover a light to satisfy a rule then get on track, it will certainly suffice. If you have 10 minutes, a $3.00 roll of contact paper and a pair of scissors go a long way to looking better and you'll have enough for several events.

Just my 2 cents, don't mean to step on any toes. It doesn't matter a hill of beans in your driving or lap time but shows that you have made some effort at preparation.

I do too, if time permits. Personally, I think the vinyl looks a lot more clean than any other option and agree that its not something you take off nor is it remotely expensive in the grand scheme of things. Here's the car w/ the vinyl over the lights.

 

Vinyl would be the first choice, but for the "arrive and drive" crowd, racer tape is the way to go IMO.

I've used vinyl, packing tape, duct/racer tape, even painters tape. I like the clear headlight look so I've settled on helicopter tape. It's very thick, stays clear even when cleaned w/ simple green, and takes amazing abuse! I've had a "bump" on track and come in to find my corner marker shattered but all the peices help in place by the tape, good stuff.

I think pegasus carries it.

I didn't say it was cheap, but for $200 that's enough to do your headlights, bumper, mirrors, tow vehicle, your buddies street car ect...Here's a place that sells a smaller roll, prob enough for two-three headlight jobs for $77, still not as cheap as packing tape but you get what you pay for.
