Question about Tuner Lug Nuts.........

What makes tuner lug nuts or spline drive nuts that are shorter than normal? I have a set of Racing Hart Sprint Hart Tuners with normal tuner lug nuts. First of all, it seems that the studs are barely peeking out of the hole. Second, the lug nuts stick so far out, I am worried anyone can use a pair of vice grips to take them off.

Any suggestions???
