Default Rusty colored looking spots?

Anyone have these spots on their car? I thought they were rust but they are not. I asked this guy I work with and he said it is acutally sap from trees. He said to use a light rubbing compound and that should take it off. I tried goo gone and scrubbing that did take it off but after ALOT of work. Just though yall would like to know incase this happened to any of you. I'll try to get pics of what I'm talking about and we'll see if the rubbing compound takes it off. Any other suggestions?
