Default HP Gain with smalller pulleys??


I kno this is honda tech... For hondas... But my brothers got a 2000 Ford Contour SVT... And he heard he could gain about 20 HP jus by changing some pulleys... Im not sure which ones he was talking about so thats why im here...

Just want to kno if its possible... Have you heard of it before...

You don't gain horse power by adding them, you could free some up maybe. I will never put an under drive pulley on any of my cars.

He is probably talking about putting on smaller pullies from a company such as Unorthodox Racing for example. Power is achieved in two ways, underdriving and weight reduction. Most of the power that pullies add comes from weight reduction. Unorthodox Racing claims that there is an approx. 2.7hp gain per every pound lost on the crankshaft. They have found that 85% of the power gains found from installing pullies are the result of a lighter pulley. The rest of the power gain comes from underdrivng. This slows the accessories down which helps reduce their power draw from the vehicle.

As for your friends vehicle. Unorthodox's webpage says that the stock SVT pulley weighs around 4lbs. Their aftermarket crankshaft pulley weighs under 1lb! There should be a good power gain just by changing the pulley. Not all cars are created equal however. Some cars will benifit more thans others when adding pullies.

I see.... So what your saying is tha weight reduction increases hp obviously... But its not going to be the 20+ hp he had heard...
