Every now and then, when i drive my car and it gets hot, it seems ok but every now and then, very frequently, if i downshift to a lower gear, i would get a squeal, and if i put it back into neutral it would go away.
then if i put it back into gear, it might or might not squeal but the only way of curing the problem would be going into neutral and then putting it back into gear to hope that it doesn't squeal
what could be the problem
clutch? bearings?

The only things that usually squell in the engine bay are belts, check your alternator belt, if it has cracks and is loose then you should try replacing that. I would try that first and go from there.
