Shipping costs for a bike?
I might be buying a bike at some point in the future, only problem is that the bike is a good 1500 miles from where I live during the summer and 1000 miles away from my apartment at school. How expensive would it be to ship a 1993 GSXR600 that sort of distance? Would I just be better off finding a cheap airfare down there and riding the bike back to my apartment?
I paid $340 to have my bike ('95 Honda CBR600F3) shipped from Texas to California. The company I used was Bikes Across America (915-728-2515). You can call them up and find out. There are several companies out there, but some will only ship to an airport. BAA shipped it to my door. The problem with this, is that you won't know the condition of the bike.
I don't think I would fly there. Maybe to check the bike out in person, but travelling back 1000 or 1500 miles would be a PITA. Plus, you'll need insurance already and you'll have to bring your gear with you.
In the end, find a bike close to you. Go through shipping only if it's a last chance option.

bike shipping is not cost effective when trying to get a "deal" on a regular production bike. If its one of a kind or special to you then maybe. 1500 miles door to door would be anywhere from 300-800. Port to port would be 200-400. And like the man said, you don't know what you're getting. Not a good idea for someone who isn't very familiar

I'm just throwing the idea out there, probably wont actually be able to afford a bike until next summer anyways.

I had my Shadow 1100 shipped from Seattle to Columbus, Ohio and it only cost me 145.00. The catch was that the guy I bought it off of had to crate it up and deliver it to the shipping hub and then I had to pick it up at the shipping hub, but if the guy you're buying the bike off of is willing to do that for a small fee it might be something to look into. The company that shipped it was Forward Air, it only took 3 days to get the bike too.
Good Luck
