Default B16...engine light...no speedo...???

Well i just bought a 91 CRX SI. The swap was done by a shop not the owner...not like that REALLY makes a difference. Anyways the engine light is constantly on and i haven't had a chance to check out the ECU codes.

also the speedo is not working and there are aftermarket guage covers i'm think that the speedo isn't working because A: they broke the needle B:the speedo cable isn't connected on the cluster or tranny C: the speedo cable is broken all together and i need a new one.

Now could the reason why the engine light is on is because the speedo is either AB or C. On my old 90 GS integra when my cable pulled off the cluster the engine light came on instantly. once it was plugged in no engine light.

is this the same on the CRX? anyone ever hear of such a thing.

lastll i know the motor is probably shot... i don't have the paper work in front of my but a leak down showed the 3rd cylindar leaking ALOT. im thinking it needs rings and a rebuild while im at it.

thanks in advance ... your knowledge is appriciated.

well the vehicle speed sensor could be functional, but if the cable is not connected the engine light would come on. I'll check the cable tomarrow.

thanks for the input

Yeah it's code 17 but something I've noticed is that it comes on at really odd times, when I did my first swap I was able to do around 3 miles before the CEL would come on.

7 and 9 are both dizzy codes from what I remember, you either have bad dizzy wiring or a bad distributor.

Definately check the wiring, if these "professionals" forgot the speedo cable who knows how they wired the dizzy..this is why I decieded to do my own swap, I learned, I saved money *well not really, tools = $ but now I have them all =P*, and nobody else is responsible for any screw ups. Speedo cable is like $10 at the junker, pretty easy to install.

leakdown numbers don't lie.. but from my experiances, for the most part.. i didn't get a CEL till abotu 5 miles down the road on a non-working speedo. however, sooner or later, the ECU will see your not moving, and throw a code. and you will not get VTEC, if your setup has VTEC. another thing.. yes.. check the wirring please.. if a shop did this.. it prolly SHOULD be running alittle better than your coplaining.

17 is VSS.. and 4 and 9 are distributor codes.. check the ECU.. it will tell you all!

Code 7 should be TPS.

Like an oxygen sensor code, it takes time to see this one because it is perfectly normal for the engine to be running for some time without a signal (the oxygen sensor must get warm before producing a signal). Specifically, you could be sitting there just revving the engine. So the ECU cuts you a little slack because it is entirely possible that this is what you are doing. Only after the ECU sees that the engine has been running at RPMs much greater than idle for some time does it decide to tell you that something is wrong.
