Is there such thing as just a water cooled turbo ? or do they all require oil ? are there any benefits to one or the other ? or both ?

 

A good amount of cars that are turbo'ed from the factory have oil and water cooling. A turbo needs oil in order to lubricate the rotating parts when it is spooling. I don't think i've ever heard of a turbo that doesn't need oil. As for water cooling, yes it does help, but some people have a tendancy to not use the water cooling ability.

I'm taking it into consideration that you are a little new to turbo's. There are plenty of topics that you can search through and lots of good people to help out with this subject on this board.

They still use oil for lubricant, but also have water inlets to help cool them. Water cooling extends your engine oil life - I tend to change my sticky goo every 2K miles.

Some of the water cooled turbos do not need coolant run to them, but I have been told all are not like that. I know for sure running water cooled T3 without water lines is OK.
