Default Spring Rate & Shock Relationship....Can Somebody Explain?

Can somebody explain, in text book style, the relationship between spring rates and the shock dampening ability. I've never been too serious about suspension....and since I've been in an Impreza RS with prodrive custom valved bilsteins and pro-kit suspension combo...i've never been more interested. I've purchased the Koni's Sports with GC 400F/300R with the Comptech 22mm sway bar/tie bar combo and I'm done with the parts now i need to understand the relationship...so i can set it up properly....spring rate is my major concern. sorry this is on a GSR
