Default introduction to racing - other forms of

I turned on speed as I was eating lunch and "The World Jetsprinting Championship" was on. So I thought "how the hell did these guys get started in this?" And for that matter how do people get into such obscure forms of racing? Thoughts?

Other examples I could think of:
- Lawntractor racing (and do those guys have a foot throttle or do they run the same "lever" system that my toro/ wheelhorse runs?)
- School Bus Racing - Nascar style
- Tractor Trailer racing

But really, I'm curious. How do you guy's think they came about doing this? Do they have friends that got them into it? Did the happen along a club event one day (and what is that like)? Did the mower rust out on the lawn tractor and they decided to take it racing? Car's I understand, but tractors, semi's and school buses!

And for those of you that saw it, do you think they have a lower class that's two dude in a fishin boat? And did you notice the hand signals fro the co driver - wtf!

Which brings up "drag boat racing" (I left that one out cause I thought this topic was a bit of stretch for this forum)

Do those guys not watch Real Tv?

i'll let the Drag RAcing crack slide

but the European semi racing, I can't get enough. Those guys are nuts what do you think the brake fade in one of those beasts is?

P.S. i'd rather go straight than hop on a lawn tracker and trun it.

I've tried watching the Drag Boats but i don't reallt get them either......They stage by holding on to a rope and about 30% of the runs end up with boats going end over end.........Now throw a water skier on the back and I'll tune in every week

Ohhhhh.. i didn't know what jetsprinting was either thanks for the link. I have seen it on Speed before those guys are absolutely amazing drivers. I thinks it's very entertaining to watch. (see above comment about the water skiers it applies here as well)

Now there's a series running in the US, STRANA. They'll be at Road America on August 21-24th as part of the ALMS/World Challenge race there. Can't wait to see these 1000hp monsters running around the track.

http://www.stranaracing.com/

Whoa! How cool is that, they're even sponsored by Tonka!

Anything that moves, or can move, people are going to race. I've heard of folks racing belt sanders and floor polishers. At MG Club national conventions, one of the big events is the valve cover race, where folks put wheels on MG valve covers and race them down a specially built ramp. People have won and lost fortunes betting which drop of water would get to the bottom of a windowpane first. Steamboats on the Mississippi, crowded with passengers, used to risk boiler explosions by tieing down their safety valves to go faster while racing. Some did explode, with great loss of life. I can't think of a form of transportation that hasn't been raced at some time or other.

Probably not as much as you'd think, they're water-cooled! Check out the steam coming out of the wheels next time you watch.

I was watching the boat-autocross too, I love the navigators who just point their fingers where to go. I guess you wouldn't be able to hear him talking over the giant uncorked V8 that's 2 inches behind the seats!

I always thought that they got so hot that they smoked........Water cooled is probably a better explanation

Remember it! Hell, I started it! I was all set to establish NSBRA when the Civil War broke out.

*WRXRacer111 has just keeled over and died laughing*

Seriously... I love watching jetsprint boats. Some of the most entertaining racing I've seen. I'd love to drive one or at least ride in one.

BTW, I've oversteered a riding mower. We had an old one that you could push the brake/clutch pedal in just enough to engage only the clutch... needless to say, hit the clutch and coast down the hill, then tap the brake as you made a turn. Nice little trailbrake oversteer on grass, lol. Just had to make sure you lean WAAAAY inside so you don't flip the thing, ie sitting on the fender.

lol!!! I'm sure that Grant and Forrest would have been more than happy to be part of the NSBRA than be part of a nasty civil war... I know I would have been

This post is frickin great. I always wondered these things myself. Heck, sometimes I wonder how we get involved in any form of racing. The closest road course to me is 2 hours away, it's not like I hung around the track when I was younger.

I attribute drinking to the introduction of obscure forms of motorsports.

Legend has it that the Kiwi's (New Zealanders) started the whole Jetsprint thing and developed the steerable outdrive pump units...

Vracer111, who likes the combination rally/autocross racing event known as jetsprint boat racing, which uses 1200hp Chevy 350 V8 motors in boats with rollcages that run in trenches...

P.S. - Lawnmower racing rocks! Nearly 50mph on grass and dirt with tight turns is fun to watch!
