tension on alt. belt

i bought a dayco 31" belt today for my alternator and i dont seem to be able to get the right amount of tension on it. how tight is the belt supposed to be? also maybe i am missing something but the only way i see that i can tighten is by sliding the alternator, and it is already as far back as it will go. can someone help me

using a prybar is not going to give me that much tension. im thinking that i should just buy a 30.5" belt

Couldnt you just go to the autoparts store and cross reference the right belt for your car?? Instead of randomly buying a belt and hoping it will fit?
