oil leak near vtec solenoid?
I have an oil leak coming from near my vtec solenoid on a b16a. I cant pinpoint where it is coming from. The solenoid gaskets have been replaced. What gaskets are there that can be replaced in this area, on the distributor side of the motor?? I thought there were camshaft seals, but i have been told there aren't on that side? Anybody have this problem and fix it???

NO there are no cam seals on the distributor side...
try checking the valve cover gasket like 90blackcrx said. also check the head gasket. Best way is to actually clean the motor by degreasing it where the oil is and go from there. There is a possiblity that oil is coming out of the distributor if its not tightend enough.

There a CAM PLUG there though. Look just behind the VTEC pressure switch...
Yep, that rubber circle is a PLUG that stops oil coming from the cam end.
$8 at Acura. 90-93 LS, or any other B series, for that matter.

Yeah, i am almost certain thats where the leak is coming from. I have been told to go aftermarket on it though, rather than oem..... anybody else agree on that? And what did you use?
I had a leak last week coming from my D16Z6 distributor. I thought is was the VTEC solenoid or valve cover gasket, but imagine my surprise. The little O-ring shaft seal on the cam end of the distributor housing got forced out by oil pressure. Oil was actually leaking into the distributor, and dripping out the bottom onto the tranny. Crappy remanufactured distributor. I just used a good o-ring seal from a junk H23 dist that I had lying around. Solved the problem. Easy way to tell is run your fingers under the dist cap and housing, looking for fresh oil, then remove the cap and look inside to confirm.

The rubber cam seal by my VTEC solenoid leaks too. It doesn't leak much at all, so I just don't worry about it. I understand that's a fairly common leaking point.
how much oil are we talking about? a little seep here and there, no big deal. if there's a lot of oil coming out then i'd bet the vtec solenoid gasket is the culprit. i had a 1st gen b16 where the oil would essentially pour out of the motor. you could see it dribbling down from directly beneath the vtec solenoid. high temp silicone along with a new seal would work best to stop this leak..just a new seal alone will sometimes tear and not fix the leak. best of luck..
