HELP! Car won't start...starter works but won't turn over

HELP! Car won't start...starter works but won't turn over
my buddy's got a I-4 99 EX 5 speed...he just came down from NJ and must go back this weekend. We drove all the way here and made it w/o a prob. The other day it was raining hard and he had to drive through it.
Today he went to start the car and it didn't start. The starter is fine. It cranks cranks cranks, but it won't turn over.
Checked all fuses...no probs there. Going to check spark plugs next. Looked at the air filter and it looked dry. He does not have ANY aftermarket parts.
Anybody else have any ideas what else to check.
