Default hpde tires

would you guys rather have 225/45/17 azenis all around, or 205/45/16 Kumho V700's?

do you guys think a 225 series victoracer would work on a 16x6.5 wheel?

Charles - who thinks he's making things harder than they need to be..

for hpde's, the Later... but the first choice would last longer, if you have the camber to support the 225s

Personally I think the 225s would be too wide for a 6.5 in wheel.

I can run as much camber as I need. suspension is fully adjustable. How much camber would I need for the 205 v700's?

Maybe I should just sell these wheels, and get something a bit wider for the track...

Does your car have safety gear? Remeber that with R-compounds, your speed increases quite a bit.

Also, the Azenis will last a lot longer and be more forgiving than the R compounds when you screw up.

I run 15x7" wheels w/ 205/50/15 size tires. These work well. I like the 15" wheels because it helps with initial acceleration exiting a turn(lower ratio). The 205 works well with my camber settings(-1.8 total up front), and gives a nice side profile on a 7" rim. I tried 225s to see what all the hype was about... tore them up. My deduction is that I would need more negative camber (about -2.5 total) to run these efficiently, and a wider(7.5") wheel would probably help, but 7" is as wide as I can go in my series.

Key points to remember... for all cars, since you have a different car than me:
1) Smaller diameter (15") would have less weight, and emulate lower gearing than a larger(17") wheel.
2) wider may give a bigger footprint, but if your wheel width and camber isn't set to support that width, it can have negative effects on handling and tire wear.

I think a nice 215/45-16 Azenis would work well on those 16" wheels. That's what I would use without the appropriate safety gear. Or Azenis on the "17s."

you bring up a good point.. I "plan" to get the roll bar, seats, and harness within 6 months or so. So I'll probably end up doing 2-3 events before the safety gear goes in. I already upgraded my brakes to 4-pot 300zx calipers, and good fluid, etc, so I know I can stop..

I'll be runnin in Intermediate if that makes a difference.

I would have to agree with Mike. We used the 215/45-16 Azenis on George's ITR for over a year, and they work great for schools, and provide lots of grip for the money. That would be my vote.

At least for me, running the 215/45-16 would get annoying... the effective gearing change would force a lot more shifts between 3rd and 4th than I do now. But, I don't know how much faster you are with Intermediate skillz and suspension work.

If it matters, I haven't even seriously considered stickies for my car.

I think I could really use a smaller tire.. I've only been on VIR N, Full, and lowes, but at all three I had corners where I ended up too high in the revs to downshift, but too low to give me the power I need to really pull through the corner..

I'm sure I may find myself in the exact opposite situation though as I don't notice when the revs are perfect for a corner..

Only reason I'm really considering the sticky's is because it was suggested by my last instructor that I could really benefit from running some victoracers or equivelent.. that and getting rid of my stupid fuel cut at 115.

FWIW, I know several folks who have used 225-50-16 Victos on 16x6.5 VW wheels with good results. Same overall size (well, almost... it's pretty exact with street tires) as the 225-45-17.

I don't think it will be open. Last time I heard it was still dirt.

I would also go with these 215/45-16 Azenis

Run the street tires. They are better for HPDEs as they will give you audible feedback. Plus, if you make a mistake you haven't trashed a race tire!

I have done class room for several years and I ALWAYS suggest street tires for schools. Race tires do not make you any better (sometimes they make you worse as they cover mistakes) they just make you faster.

Have fun!

if it was up to me there would be no R compound tires allowed in the beginner or intermediate groups and you'd be required to have a harness and roll bar to use them in the advanced group.

Like the captain said, you will learn better on street tires. More feedback, larger slip angles and lower speeds make for a much better learning environment. I would suggest using something at least V rated though. My experience with H rated tires is they really dont hold up under track conditions -- they chunk badly.

as far as the size goes, 16" tires generally cost less than 17". saving money

From those two choices, I would go with the Falkens - but then again those are the only tires I've only tried. Besides, they're cheap.

Honestly, though, I had a blast on all-seasons at Mid-Ohio. They didn't stick as well, but with a lower HP car, the less traction helped me slide more and feel faster.
