Default Intermittant electrical problem - any guesses ?

At random times , the battery light will illuminate in my 91 Si . Sometimes , it will flicker at idle , other times a steady glow , sometimes flicker under deceleration , sometimes glow steadily under acceleration . Almost always ,a increasing RPM's causes it to go out . I've checked my alternator and it *seems* to be charging fine , and I've not been - knock on wood - stranded anywhere with it . Turning on the fan , radio , lights etc doesn't have any effect . The only thing that *might* be related is that the radio will sometimes get staticky and dim - like when you're one minute from walking due to a bad alt . However , the battery light doesn't illuminate then . I replaced the alt. for good measure and cleaned the ground to no avail . Any suggestions as to what to look for and try ? Thanks .

what kind of alternator did you replace it with? i had a very similar problem... the battery light would randomly come on strong, or fade in at idle, and go away as i revved it... alternator was a kragen one. charging system checked out fine, charging at 14 or so volts. i let it be that way for a while, maybe 6 months. then, on my drive from san jose to san diego, my battery blew up, so i pulled over, popped the hood, and it was steaming, smelled of sulfur. turns out, the alternator was putting out 19+ volts, and blew the battery up. replaced the alternator with a japanese remanufactured unit (mitsubishi), and the battery light thing has completely disappeared....

anyway, from now on i'm buying only japanese made parts, or oem.

i'd say just keep a voltmeter in your car, and check what the alternator is doing frequently. one sign of an overcharging alternator is crazy fast wipers, things like both headlights burning out at the same time... hehe dont' ask how i know.. i should've put 2 and 2 together
