Default Why are Type R's being stolen?

I don't know about 97 and 98 R's, but my 2001 R has anti theft protection in the form of a chip in the key that communicates with the ECU. Without the key, the engine is not supposed to start. As far as I know, it'll turn over all day long, but will never fire. Does anybody out there have any information on this? I can only presume the cars are being flatbedded or towed. How else can someone drive it off without the key?

Since it seems that you are new to this board, discussing "how to steal" a Type R is not a good idea. Thieves visit this board. Usually it is best to discuss "how to protect" a Type R. Just trust me, and other owners who had their cars stolen, the immobilizer is not enough to protect the car from the professional. You don't need to know why, just need to know that you need more protection. Do a search on this board to find out what you need to do to slow(not stop !!) a professional thief.

"discussing "how to steal" a Type R is not a good idea"

Yeah, I see your point. I guess it's tough for people to share methods of preventing theft, as the theives who visit these forums will simply use this to their advantage. Some people seem to trash the Lo Jack systems, saying they're easily beatable. Does anybody use The Club? Has anyone who's had an R stolen had the club on at the time? I'm not sure what else to ask here.

My general theory on the whole matter is that if a -professional- (key word there) thief wants to steal your car, nothing will stop them. (Stupid example) I mean, look at the kind of crap they do in Gone in 60 seconds. True, it's just a movie, but I imagine if you're a professional, it's just that easy to steal a car.

I think the best thing to do is just get good insurance :\

Its worthless. The club is made out of steel... your steering wheel isn't...

It's been said before, and it's a good point...layers of protection are a good idea. If someone really wants your car, and they have the means, there's not much you can do. But to protect it from joe thief who's not a real pro, having a good secuirty system, installed well, plus the club, parking in safe areas, etc....all make your car less desirable than the SUV down the street with the doors unlocked. Or, build up an imunity to some vile disease like Ebola and infect your car with it. Warning: kills passengers too.
