yea just shift at 8.8k u sould be fine ..first you'll hit the rev limiter but you'll get use to it,and shift at where you suppose to shift at..hope dat helps
What I don't understand is why didn't Honda make our tacs display the correct redline rpm? VTEC engages at 6,000 rpm (indicated) when it actually begins at 5,700 rpm. This is the case for my car and the same for my friends 98 Type R. Obviously all of our tacs are inaccurate but they are all consistently inaccurate, meaning Honda could have made them accurate. Understand what I'm saying? I guess I don't really care because I like seeing the needle go deep in to the red (and have my passengers think my motor revs to 9,000 RPM).
I agree....there is consistency in inaccuracy....which means it was something their QA could have fixed. They could have had a better "buffering" process to display rpms.
JMHO - but I'm thinking Honda was saving their own ***! By making the tach ~300-400rpm higher at redline then what it REALLY is, it makes a new owner stay safely away from bumping the limiter. I know the fuel cutoff should keep you from harm, but hey, have you ever looked at the stock fuel curve??? They are dumping huge amounts of fuel at high rpm to stay safe, so I think this fits right in.
btw - my field unit compared to stock tach shows 400rpm difference at redline.
Good luck!

According my 2000 brochure, the redline is at 8400 and the fuel cut-off is at 8500 rpm's. I'm not sure where the other guys are getting their numbers from. Perhaps the true cut-off is higher, but like the other guy said, Honda covers their *** by saying it's lower than it actually is. I always shift right at 8400, and so far haven't blipped the throttle high enough to hear the fuel cut-off go into effect.
