Default Accord LX drums

hey people.... I got a little problem when changing my rear drums on my 96 Accord LX. I took off the 2 pins on each side of the shoes and the book tells me to pull back and unhook the upper spring. But it seems no where in hell that I can move the upper spring. Am I doing this procedure correct? I tried pliers, grips, everything and cant pull back on the spring to unhook it. Can someone who done it tell me a easier way? Thanks for the advice.
