Opinions about Universal mufflers.. Please help
Okay I would like to have some type of exhaust but can't really afford the $500 cat-back systems out there. So I want to know is there and decent universal mufflers that I could purchase that would have Greddy like sound quality?
Anybody have a universal setup and care to share opinions?

Many are going to disagree or flame me for this, but there isn't much difference between a universal or cat back. Most universal performance muffler is of the same straight through design of the cat backs. Exhaust is exhaust. All it matter is the look and sound. If it's straight through design, it will flow out the same way no matter what brand. You'll not going to feel the kick-in-butt gains anyways. OK, if you get gains on a cat-back, it's useless 98% of the time in day to day driving.
If look and sound is what you are looking for, then weld on a universal muffler. You'll find that the stock headers, and pipes are not that bad, as most want to you believe. With the performance muffler, you'll lossen up some restriction (stock muffler is the most restrictive), maybe get better response.
So if you don't feel like spending $500+, then don't.
Counter point: Most universal muffler will sound louder than a cat-back of major brand like Greddy. That's because they use cheaper materials inside. From my ears, I don't think most "universals" can duplicate the sounds of major brands like Greddy, Tanabe, or Mugen. But the universal mufflers will still give you that good performance sound. Just don't expected to be something it's not.
P.S. I have a review of Maganaflow muffler on my un-updated website. http://www.geocities.com/drewman88/H...vic/index.html

I agree, some good mufflers to check out also would be the ES oval mufflers listed on http://www.jdmhondaparts.com and dyno max turbo mufflers or the bullet series. Any straight through design will work but caution they could be loud, if so use a resonator. Also make sure your bends are all mandrel bends if you will be doing piping from the catback and make sure the inner diameter of the piping is the size that you want. For example a 2.5in pipe is the outside diameter, the inside diameter is going to be smaller since you have to take in the thickness of the piping itself.
Like superflea mentioned... the ES muffler is great.
I bought my car from http://www.jdmhondaparts.com and it has the ES muffler on it. It has 2 1/2 custom piping and is a straight thru design. IMO it flows as good as most aftermarket catbacks. It has a nice tone also

i just suggest if you get the univesal muffler, you should get the es oval muffler, with 2.5 inch custom cat-back pipes. custom piping isnt that expensive. my buddy got his piping for like 150 bucks or something really close to there, the es muffler looks like stock too. but you get better flow. ask SIINSI if he likes his.
I have the RS*R/Invidia muffler with 2.25" axle-back piping. The sound is very deep, not bumble-bee fart can. It's a little louder than I'd like it to be (I like really quiet), but the silencer makes it significantly quieter. I like the look, and I've never seen another RS*R/Invidia on anyone else's car around here.
