Default Wiring Headaches

Ive been trying to help my friend with a 88 civic hatchback with a ls/vtec motor getting it back running again. We are using a b16a ecu and a 89 crx si wiring harness as of right now. A little over 2 weeks ago we got it running after experiencing some problems getting it to start. But after getting that fixed it ran good for 2 weeks. Then one morning he goes out to star the car and smoke starts coming from the cluster and it wont start. It also fried up the cluster pretty good, so thats why we are using a crx cluster and we went to the junk yard and got a uncut 89crx si wiring harness that goess from the ecu to the ignition to the headlights. Brand new harness, still wont start. Weve check every fuse and ground a thoasond times. I have no idea were to start to look. Any help woud be great.
