Default ITA CRX need an external oil cooler ? Yes or no ?

the cars going to be racing @ Road Atlanta. I suspect its going to be near or over 100 degrees on that day.

My question is on a 20 lap Pro IT race will my car need an oil cooler to survive?

I dont have a temp guage and that would go in as almost a package but I wanted to see if it would be needed..

Thanks guys~

No. I have never needed one in any threeITA CRXs (including many springts and Enduros over 100 degrees) I have had and know very few people who run them. Vws and Mazdas, yes...Hondas ,no. Jim Leithauser lived in Colorado and said that a few high altitude tracks required them but rest of us would be fine without. Throw some Water Wetter in the radiator and make sure your have enough good oil in the sump. I have been trying to install one nicely with an Accusump for my 14:1 engine in the EP car but now that is is going to FP with 10:1, I'm not going to worry about it for quite awhile.

install an oil temp meter and keep an eye on your temps, if you see more than 250ish then you prob. need one. Oil temp is a good thing to watch when on track IMO.

Oscar White has a problem with his CRX si overheating. This is even when running an oil cooler. My advice would be to get one if you have ANY doubt. They are relatively inexpensive (no, you don't need aeroquip fittings and steel braided lines) and simple to install. I installed one with a remote filter kit. It makes it much easier to change the filter.

It's a good idea to have one. Last road atlanta race there was a crx that overheated and couldn't finish the race. We have a Mocal unit from summit and as someone said, it also makes changing the oil easier. Definitely get an oil temp gauge (as well as water temp and oil pressure) and don't let it go past 250F if you care about your engine. Hope to see ya at RA, what does your car look like?

its red with lots of white decals.. And look for a "cnn lies" decal on the back,,

OK.. so from what ive heard its not needed but since i am 200lbs UNderweight it probably isnt a bad place to start! Unless I find a dry sump system!

your not by any chance the guy whose car has been @ hot wheels ? If so I spoke to you a LONg time ago when a red civic was on the frame machine..

200lbs UNDERweight?? If so, you might want to go back through the pile of stuff that you pulled out w/ a GCR in lap and figure out what wasn't supposed to go I'm thinkng. Either that or you really need to eat.

And I agree w/ others that it (oil cooler) is good insurance as well as properly working temp guages.

Just an thought, irrespective of your political motives (as they interract w/ your club racing) with your bumper sticker and for whatever reasons you feel you should promote this concept ... there is an ITA racer that went to the Middle-East to cover the Persian Gulf conflict as a cameraman for CNN (believe this is all correct) and although he might take no offense to it (and I am not sure he's back stateside yet either), it might not go over that well with others that heretofore do not know you from "Adam." Unless you know something that I am missing here, I'd question how important this message is to you. Meerly an FYI and do with it what you will.

I can tell you that down here in sunny Florida, my autometer oil temp gauge was past 300 mark. This was simply a track day with 30 minutes track session. I put an oil cooler, run a standard Ford v8 filter which put my at almost 6 quarts of oil. Now, even running an enduro, it stays around 240/250 max.

Also, I'm curious to know how is you car 200lbs under weight?

Im not quite sure how im 200lbs under either.. And when I bought the car it had been "pre stripped" by the old owner so things like the heater core were missing.

The good news is most of that stuff is back in the car but I still need to find some weight. I thought the cage would help by being chrome-moly its really light.

I havent included myself in the weight but if i did im still 30lbs short.. i suppose its time to run ballast!
