orange anti-freeze?
I was just wondering if Dex-Cool(orange) anti-freeze was bad for Honda cooling systems. It's been in my car for over a year and I just changed it, but I can't make out any differences from switching back to Prestone. Thanks

DEX-COOL SUCKS!! Do not use it in your vehicles. I work for a gm dealer and we change that crap out for green when ever we can. Its corosive and is one of the reasons why gm intake manifolds leak so bad.

Honda cooling systems need a coolant that does NOT contain any silicates. Prestone green is one such coolant. Xerex, Peak, all that other stuff, they all contain silicates and should NOT be used in a Honda cooling system. Use Prestone (you can actually get Presone pre-mixed now) or Honda OEM coolant.

just the regular green stuff should be fine, or the new pre-mixed stuff. I think Prestone makes another color for other brands of cars, but use the green. I have checked the label on both regular and pre-mixed green and indeed they do not contain silicates.

On the honda coolant bottle it says "Non-silicate/Non-borate formula"
Any other type will eat the aluminum.
Stay OEM!! Even at $15.00 a gallon. (Gold is less expensive BTW)

So I take it Honda anti-freeze is the red color?
I have already flushed and refilled my engine with Prestone green, I was just wondering what problems I should look for from running the orange. Possible intake manifold leak, corrosion on/in the radiator, gelling? Can anyone chime in with any others?

No the Honda coolant is green just like the Prestone.
Color doesn't really matter as long as it's "silicate and borate free"
That's all the service manual says, "Coolants made for aluminum engines or radiators" or something to that effect.

Is this safe to use ?

I would assume if its safe for animals then it would be safe in my car. Anyone have any opinions on it ?

Huh? No, being "safe for animals" has nothing to do with this! It's about what is safe for the car.

The bottle HAS TO SAY: "silicate and borate free".
"safe for all aluminum radiators and engines".
Or something to that effect.
Your car doesn't care if it's, "safe for animals and other living things". LOL
If you can't find the right kind just use "Honda HG coolant" to be sure.

Q: Does Prestone® Antifreeze/Coolant contain phosphates?
A: Some European automobile manufacturers request that a phosphate-free antifreeze be used in their vehicles. This issue is related to the extremely high mineral content of the water in Europe. If you were to mix an antifreeze that contained phosphates with the type of water they have in Europe, it may produce deposits that can settle in the cooling system and promote corrosion. However, in North America we do not have this type of water problem. Typical North American coolants have contained phosphates (which is part of the corrosion inhibitor package) for many years. Therefore, the question of phosphates is a non-issue here in North America. Prestone® Antifreeze/Coolant is completely safe for use in both foreign and domestic vehicles. For those consumers who would feel more comfortable using a phosphate-free antifreeze, our Prestone® Extended Life 5/150 Antifreeze/Coolant is phosphate, silicate, and borate free

Yeah I know, I was wondering if anyone used it in our cars.

That question was referring to phosphate content. The regular Prestone coolant is also silicate and borate free just like the Extended Life stuff.

Thanks I didn't know that. I thought because of the way the paragragh
was worded ONLY the extended life stuff was silicate/borate free.
It also says that the "Low/Tox" stuff is safe for "thin aluminum radiators"
so I guess the above post was correct as well.
Good info.
