Clutch break in... how many miles is REALLY recommended?
from the search function i have found a pretty much universal opinion that 500 miles of city driving is the standard for clutch break in. i just put in a new ACT HDSS clutch and am wondering what people's reasoning is behind their choice of 500 miles.... especially when the ACT installation instructions say 200-300 miles.. i have no problem going 500 but what is the added benefit of doing approximately twice the break in that ACT recommends?? or is there any added benefit?
Its a crazy subject. Talked with alot of guys on this and some say 20-30 miles stop and go and your set. Others say 500 miles plus.
I dont have any experience with your clutch but my buddy just got a new clutch and I drove his car like 300 miles, most on a rarely used stretch of road.
Back and forth I went down that road shifting up to 5th gear and back down and then up again never shifting at more than 3000 rpm.
Well I gotta say that clutch hooks up real nice. Gonna replace my clutch soon and I am going to do that all over again.

The 200-300 that they recommend is just fine people go longer just for the sake of going longer. Its kind of like motors some car manufacturers tell you this many another that many. Some have their own methods as well. And some dont have any kind of break in period what so ever. I would say do the 300 and be done with it.
Well after I installed my clutch, I had a little bit of clutch chatter. After breaking in the clutch for 500 miles, the chatter was eliminated. The reason behind the long break in, is to ensure the the clutch disk mates properly with the flywheel. Sure you could go 300, but to be sure I go to 500. It's really up to personal preference. I always say, "It's better to be safe than sorry."
The last thing you want to end up with is a slipping, and chattering clutch.

I've always done over 500km's on a clutch before calling it good. When I did my ACT and when my brother did his ACT we both noticed a big difference in engagement feel after about the 3-400km mark. That's why I really always recommend doing the full break-in period. You might get lucky and not glaze the clutch, but why risk it?
