Shade Tree Clutch Job (Do it Yourself)?
Hi guys and gals...
My wife's 97 GS-R needs a clutch. The portion of the pedal throw where you can manage the clutch engagement has gotten down to about 1/2" and using the clutch is pretty difficult. Combine that with flutter on engagement and I think the flywheel, pressure plate, clutch disc, and throwout/release bearings need to be replaced. The car has 106,000 on the odometer.
I've got the Haynes manual and have looked at some of the clutch stuff, but not extensively at this point.
Is it hard to do the clutch job without all the special tools listed in the manual? Anyone done it?
If I try it I will have the car on stands at their maximum height and a transmission jack to drop the transmission. Does this seem reasonable? Any advice?
Thanks for any help!

Replacing the clutch isn't so difficult, it's more or less time consuming due to the amount of **** you have to take off/move around to get the tranny off. Having a tranny jack is going to make things much easier for you. As far as special tools go, I don't remember anything real special or out of the ordinary, except the 12 point sockets you'll need to get the pressure plate unbolted. You'll also need a clutch alignment tool, but most kits come with one- if not, almost any auto parts retailer will rent one out for next to nothing. It sounds to me like a spring has popped loose from your clutch disk, hence the harsh engagement. Mine and a lot of other members' clutches have done the same, it's a common occurence on Integs. If you've never done a clutch job, you're looking at a weekend of downtime, which means you can take your time and get the job done right. When it comes to tasks like this, you shouldn't skimp out on the quality of work, as it will be a PAIN IN THE *** to drop your tranny again when you found that your clutch isn't aligned properly, etc. Make sure and get a friend and a cold 30 pack of your choice, and start wrenching away. Good luck with that.
Wow - thanks for the good information.
Do you know approximately what the transmission weighs? Would a 450lb capacity transmission jack be a sketchy bet?
Thanks again.
