How safe is a CAI
I realy thinking of getting one, but after all of this talk about hydrolocking, I'm quite scared. How safe is the Bypass valve? Does it affect the gains in any way? I'm in Montreal and am worried about the winter, should I be?
What about placement...I see people that have installed it right in the Engine bay, and others seem to tuck it away underneath (I guess to suck up colder air). I supposed if it's position facing down under the car that it's more likly to suck up water.
And lastly, My car is 4 months old and still under warranty, can I safley remove the intake that is there now without damage so that I can put it back if I have to?
Is there a FAQ for this anywhere...
TIA

P.S. Sorry about the long post...

Here's your FAQ:

Yes, you can take the intake off and put it back on without damaging anything.. easy to reverse if/when lease is up or whatever..

I bought teh AEM CAI, and the bypass valve.
If I had not spent teh money here is what I would have done: Once you take out the resonator box, you will see taht you can disconnect the pipe that goes through it. I would use this pipe to feed cold air into the stock air box. Just disconnect teh pipe from the resonator chamber, and position it, so that air will flow into it well.
Cheap mod, also, I have been looking for something to use in a setup similar to the cold air box here: http://www.theoldone.com/sc/type-r/b18c5-prototype.html
Closes I've found has been 10 gallon pland buckets, then cut it in half. I'm working on it. . ..
Anyway, the CAI has to be cut with a hacksaw in order to get teh Bypass valve on there. For $250 I'd rather just make my own intake system.

If your area rain or snow a lot then i'd suggest gettin a short ram intake. But if its not just get the AEM CAI with bypass valve. Installed easy. I had to cut my intake in half to install it though. You can also put it back to your factory stuff if you don't feel like you need it or whatever good luck.
Have to agree with the last post. Reinstall stock Intake. Or buy a sort Ram. The Bypass valves is a real skecthy since it stated that it protects when completely submerged in water. Injen made a shield which personally think is a damn good Idea. But it would protect water splashes too!
Cold air intake blows.... Just chop your ******* highbeam light out and run short ram its just as good. Two of my freinds hydrolocked thier cars on last thur when it stormed. one was a 01 gsr with 2200 miles and a civic si. **** that its not worth the extra hp.

Well I've had my AEM CAI for about 3 mo now, and I've had no problems. I driven through hard rain, light rain, and no rain w/wet roads(today MOF). Of course I avoid puddles, but I have hit them before, came out good. I've even checked my filter after a drive when it was wet out and noticed the outside of the filter was wet, but bone dry on the inside.

I've had my AEM CAI for over 2yrs! I run no fender liner and i removed my front bumper lenses (direct air to the filter) and i've never had a problem. I've been through everything.
ive had cai on my teg for like 1/2 year.... been through rain a billion tyms, noting happened, all my buds got cais, they never hydrolock, jus be carefull if its raining hard as ****, for puddles, u should do that ne way....
clean your filter often....
when you clean it, you oiled it ,that way it is in a way waterproof...
never took off your fender liner, you'll run a bigger risk that way...

If i leave the CAI in the engine bay (not pointing down under the car) is that relativly safe for water intake? Would I still need a bypass valve?
if you do that then your not really using a cai anymore just a short ram b/c you'll be back in the engine bay not the bumber resulting in no cold air but you will be safe .
Hey winglessR dude that suck about your friends 2 sweet cars. Did both of them use the AEM Bypass Valve??? If they did, did they use the clip also from AEM cuz of the recall on some of the bypass valve???
