Default Fun with oil! and lights!

Yesterday I changed my oil and filter. everything was normal.

Last night I was driving to the video store with my girl to pick up a movie and about half way there I notice my battery light keeps coming on and flashing kinda randomly. So i take really easy the rest of the way there (about a mile or so). I park and pop the hood.

I look at the battery connections and it looks fine. I'm confused.

I go over to close the hood and then I notice that there is ******* motor oil all over the place! I mean everywhere! that and there is hella smoke coming from where is dripped on to the exhaust!

"What the ****!" i exclaim.

look under the car there is oil dripping ever where. looks like it's from the oil filter! damnit!

So i go to the gas station across the street (it's about 12:00) and buy 2 quarts of cheapo 10w30 and dump it all in. it still didn't show anything on the dip stick but I figured that it would be enough to get home it's like 5 min really close anyways.
Besides my girl (mary) was getting bored and wanted to go watch "Just married"

So this morning we go buy new good 10w30 and a new filter, I change my oil and filter AGAIN after like 30 miles.

Clean it up a bit, everything seems fine now. But it's still making a lot of smoke off the exhaust pipe and stuff. it's annoying but it will go away in a few days I think.

anyways the filter had some kind of assembly error in the rubber gasket seal thing it had like 3 holes in it just like holes there for no reason, maybe air bubbles in the rubber or something?

SO, when you change your filter, check the gasket for holes, if it happened to me, it can happen to you and you might not be so lucky to not damage your engine!

My question is about the battery light. Why did that come on? I think maybe my battery light and my oil light are switched some how? i'm using a SI cluster in my DX for the tach and everything else works fine!

every oil filter I have ever used has had holes in the gasket. You probably left the old filter gasket on the block and forget to check to see if it was still there before you put the new one on. . .

Was the oil EVERYWHERE... like even on the battery or alternator...

I'd imagine if it was spraying out of the oil filter some hit the alternator and made the battery light flip out...

And ALWAYS check the filter before installing it... those plants aren't really known for quality control...

and NO filter I've EVER used has had holes in the oring... holes in the body of it sure... but not on the oring.

no i aways check i know that I put the new gasket on an removed the old one. I put it on just like always... done this bout a million times on my own and other peoples cars.

It was the gasket. what kinda oil filers are you using that has holes in the gasket? are you nuts? how does a gasket make a good seal if it's got holes all the way through?

I use Fram Double guard.

One of my buddies just did a limp wrist job tightening down his oil filter and drained his engine down my friends brand new cement driveway. Any time it rains you can still see it. heh.

oil/batt light.. hmmmm the last time that happened to me I forgot to replace my oil cap.. that sh17 got EVERYWHERE.. ugggh... oh such a painful memory.. it happened twice! fack..

anyway, u sure u didnt forget your cap?

If oil got everywhere, then I'm thinking your alternator may have been affected. Oil will kil the internals with time. get a can of electronics cleaning spray ($) and douse your alternator.

good luck!

Never heard of someone with a bad oil filter seal yet. Unless that filter was dropped or maybe tampered with before you picked it up.'

The smell of the oil burning on the exhaust pipe sucks...

I use K&N oil filters and I've never seen any holes on the gasket.

make sure to lube the new gasket on the filter. just dip your finger in the new oil and wet the new gasket. this prevents cracking and leaking of the new gasket.

i use oem filters

PS "just married" sucks huh?

when you have an oil light or no oil left the ECU tries to shut off your car. my oil cooler blew a line and my motor shut off almost immediately. lucky i was driving slow at the time.

you may have motor damage now.

I don't think there is any damage. Probably because of the brand new oil that was still in there doing it's job. Plus I never went below a quart or so while it was driving, and when I knew something was wrong I took it really easy (shift at 2500 and drive like a grandma accelerating as slowly as possible...)

It's been over 100 miles now and everything is running perfect just like before really.

Only thing is that the car sill smokes a little (hardly any now) from the oil on the exhaust. Also It's still dripping oil from 10 or so places whenever I park but i know that's just "run off" from the 2 quarts of oil that was sprayed all over my engine bay
