01' zx6r ninja w a problem help!!!
Ok here is the deal the other day i was riding and i was going into second, and it started to jump, or like skip almost. At first i thought it might of been the clutch, but it wasn't like a slipping, more like a jumping in and out of gear.
Can anyone help me figure out this problem.
and if you know whats wrong with it how much would it be to fix?
and what all would be involved? thanks for your posts!

Could be a number of things. Be a little more specific. Does it do it in every gear? Under acceleration? Under normal cruising? At what rpm?
Here's a little info anyway:
1) My friend's bike did this weird "skipping" thing in 2nd gear under acceleration near 8000rpm. Turns out there wasn't enough tension in the chain. Once that was fixed, the bike was perfect.
2) My bike also did this same "skipping" in 2nd gear under acceleration. But this time, it wasn't the chain tension. One of the clutch plates were messed up and the 2nd gear set in the tranny was a little out of whack. Had to get that replaced and now everything is good. This was obviously a lot more $$$ to fix thatn #1.
So, as you can see, it can be a number of things. These are just two examples.

it does it only in second gear, Under some acceleration. When i first start the bike up and let it warm up a little, then get on it and ride. It will not do the skipping, or jerking untill the sprocket gets moving a little, so maybe it is the chain( hopefully). How long do clutches last in a bike, under normal usage, and a little beatage. My bike only has 7000 miles on it so is it due for a new clutch? Damn those smart people who make bike engines as one case, makes it so much more expensive to fix. . Since it only does it in second gear wouldn't that call for a gear or something, not a clutch. i always thought that if it was a clutch it would do it in all gears.
Should i still ride the bike and skip second gear when riding, or is that not even good for it?
Well any help would be greatly appretiated

check the chain tension. Be sure whether you're checking the spec loaded or unloaded. A clutch on its way out may only show problems in specific situations. As it worsens it happend all the time. I woudn't pin the clutch as your problem at this point. It sounds like either the chain tension mentioned or a transmission issue. Can you downshift into 2nd? Can you get into second if you really try? Do you clutch your up/downshifts? Do you revmatch? Just trying to get some feedback for diagnosis

I can downshift into second, and yes i do clutch going in and out of all gears. Slow acceleration in second is still very smooth, no problem, its only when i get on it. It does the jerking sensation. Hopefully it is the Chain and if so how can i get that tightened so it won't do it anymore, (how much is too much kinda thing) thanks for your help and feedback
clutch (adjustment, spring or friction) or shift fork. Try accelerating fast in first and see if it will do the same. You may only see it in 2nd as it has enough mechanical torque to cause the problem. Most people don't wring out first as its very short. If it happens in first and second its probably clutch related. If only second then its tranny

When i accelerate slowly it does not do it, could that be chain related? and if it does happen to be the tranny, how complicated of a process is it to rebuild it, and do you think somone with a know how of engines could tear one down and rebuild?
Just check the chain tension. It couldn't hurt. While you're paying attention to the thing get it nice and clean and lube or wax it. An ase certified mech would have no problem removing the engine, splitting the case and diagnosing the transmission ills with a service manual. Don't forget about all the seals and gaskets you have to replace when you split the case though. Depending on the design you may actually have to replace cylinder and head gaskets along w/ the usual rubbers. Oh yea, just a thought. Make sure its not the shifter lever. Check it for binds of any sort. That may allow it to only affect one gear. See if you can just take off the cover and check out the gear selector. Maybe something in there is misaligned. If you're not comfortable with anything I said, I'd take it to a competant shop. Pay them fairly and get back on the road fast with no hassles or nagging doubts about the repair.
thanks for the idea's i'm going to check all the things out i can today, and maybe have my neighbor look at it he is a bike mec. i'll keep you posted to what i come up with thanks again BUmp
