Ghetto fabulous engine removal
Hi all,
I'll be doing some work on my tranny and motor soon, so it's time for the drivetrain to come out again, without a lift. I've done it before with the help of a friend by raising the front end a few feet in the air and maneuvering it out on a jack, but I need to do it solo this time. I've seen some creative techniques here in the past, but have had no luck in finding them through the search, any help? I was thinking of getting a creeper and HD crate to hold the engine by the oilpan and roll it out like that, but I dunno if it will work. Any input would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

if i was you, i would drop the tranny and take off the head.(that will make it easier to get the rest of the block out). drain the oil and coolant. jack up the front of the car as high as you can. tie chains or ropes preferably chains because they dont stretch, securely around the engine. tie the other ropes or chains around a beam on the ceilieng and lower the front of the car. when the ropes or chains get some tension unbolt the mounts and drop the rest of the car down. after the engine is a little above the chassis you should be able to hold it by yourself since you dropped the tranny and head. throw a hood picnic and your done.
do you have an engine lift? its not real hard to get the motor and trans out the top. just have to take the mounts and brackets off and the battery tray. its usually easier than taking it out the bottom for me.

I definately recommend renting a cherry picker or borrowing one from a friend?? I tried taking the motor out from the bottom by myelf and that was a big mistake it tipped off the jacked slammed into the frame rail and then ended up falling off of the jack a real pita if you ask me!! I would never gain pull it from the bottom unless for some strange reason I couldnt get a cherry picker and it had to be done at that monet but there is no way that I would ever try it by myself again.

yup, def. get a cherry picker. I've done like 5 motors just in my 4g hatch. The cherry picker makes it so much easier, just get the balance right so that the motor tilts the right way. Also pull the hood off and DOUBLE CHECK that EVERYTHING is disconnected. Nothing worse then starting to pull a motor then you realize that your buddy didn't unbolt the shift linkage and it slams backwards and breaks the tps.
yeah pull it from the top it's a PITA otherwise. It's easy you just need to watch out for the lines and other stuff on the firewall. A little tipping of the motor goes a long way
