STS or $2004 challenge
I just landed an 89 Civic Si rolling shell for $500. It's got a blown motor (already out). Wondering which way to go, STS since it's an Si, or I'm tempted to shoot for the $2004 challenge. I can land a B16 cheap around here, and the car has the suspension done already, just needs a rear bar. I'm leaning more towards STS as I have an Si motor sitting in the garage that needs a rebuild. Any opinions Chris?
It's also a white one, and is RUST FREE (nevada/socal car).

do the 2004 challenge! i just finished reading all about it in GRM.
you will need the following:
1. a big shot of NOS. you need a high 11 sec pass in the drag test.
2. good auto-x tires. you said the suspension is done; add the big rear bar and this, in turn with Danny Shields driving, should get you a fast time...
3. make friends with an art major college student; have them do some wild type graphics on the car for a couple cases of beer and materials or something...
good luck!

You can compete with the car once a year on the other side of the country from ya ($2004 challenge in Florida), or you can build it for STS and use it about every other weekend and have a car that can beat 90% of the cars out there given a good driver.
Don't get me wrong, the $2004 challenge would be fun--but to get the most fun out of the car I think STS would be the way to go.

If you're the home engineering type...definately do the 2004 Challange. Look at what's winning, and look at the time they put into those cars. I worked the Challange this year, and it's pretty amazing what people come up with.
"If you OWN the autocross, you don't need a 11 sec pass." The winner this year ran mid 12s, for instance.

2004 Challenge sounds like a lot of fun if you're a wrencher, but STS would be a lot more fun if you'd rather drive the car.
I think if I was going to do the challenge I'd start with an FC RX-7. Or a SHO or a Camaro. The Honda would just be too handicapped at the drag strip IMHO. But that's all supposition, as I don't have the knowledge or ability to pull it off. It would be a great experience i'm sure.

Yeah, the $2004 challenge would be fun, but then I've got to go across the US to somewhere hot and muggy with alot of rain, not to mention BUGS... Or, I'll just rebuild this Si motor I have in the garage to the STS specs (ie, whatever is allowed), and go run STS all year. STS is big in San Diego and is dominated by none other than Civic Si's, and a fresh one would probably have an edge over the 100k+ mileage ones. I think it's first outing will be the National tour next March here in SD.
Hmmm...why don't you build it up for $2004 Challenge first (keeping SOLO II EP class in mind) and then convert it to EP after the $2004 Challenge.... Of course if you really get into the spirit of the $2004 challenge then your only SOLO II option will probably be converting it to a full blown mod class.... with that V8 and all-wheel driving system you'll be stuffing in the Si...

Yeah. I can't read. Did I mention that?

I'd do the $2004 challenge. Try and do both with it. I wouldn't go with the intention of winning unless you've already started and have a 3 to 4 man team. I did the $2002 challenge and it was a blast. I'd love to do it again but just don't know if our team will be able to make it. It was one of the best experiences I've had and will never forget.
So, stop whining about the weather, pull up your skirt, and build a $2004 challenge car and have a blast!
