brakes failed today help me!!!!!!
So i hit my brake pedal and i get the pedal to go to straight to the floor. but once i let it go it came back up and had pressure again. Happened once yesterdya and twice today. However it did only happen in the day when it was 100 degrees and when i was driving at night i had no problems, anyone think maybe it is just my 150k old cruddy brake fluid heating up and breaking down and a bleeding would fix the prob, or seem to be a more serious prob any input will help, thanks
This happened to me today but the pedal goes all the way down everytime and i have to pump the brakes bakc to norm pressure. Does this mean my master cylinder is gone?

Give it a try, but if its that old it may not do any good. Brake fluid absorbs moisture & that makes it corrosive. Maybe the corrosion damage is already done.
Ben-VTEC...
Yours sounds like air in the lines.

Holly ****...the same thing is happening to mine rite now.
I cant keep the car still in a hill....cause my pedal slowly drops to the floor.
I'm not loosing any fluid either.
last week I would have to press a little further on the brakes than usual from time to time...I was told to chagne the fluid, I did and its about 100000x worse now...i have no real brakes....I have to pump if want any pressure. I'm at work so I need to get back home iwth it.
I may have let air into the system while bleeding (long story), but the pedal was great for about 1 day...and just konked out on me today at lunch.
Any clues boys? I'll press the pedal and it slowly drops to the floor.
BTW...any ideas how much the master cylender goes for?

i had this happend to me awhile ago i would have to pump the breaks in order to stop so i went to acura and bought the break master cylinder from there the problem went away...
MC is most likely the culprit.. although I was having massive brake fade issues on my DA9... just replaced pads/rotors and it fixed it... I still gotta flush the fluid and get fresh stuff in there.
This must be an epidemic!
This just started happening to me this weekend. Mine happens when I apply gentle, steady pressure....the pedal doesn't stop, it just slowly creeps towards the floor. (It feels like I'm bleeding the brakes.) Then, when I release the pedal, It comes back up and has pressure again! WTF?!
I checked both fluid reservoirs and they were well within the MIN/MAX lines. I added a little fluid to each and it stopped for awhile...but the issue didn't stay away. My fluid was changed about 6months ago. It was flushed and replaced with Synthetic fluid.
So, is it my MC? Do the Integras have slave cylinders...could it be that? What about the brake booster? Are there any diagnostics I could perform in my garage? Anything I can visually check? I've looked for fluid in the engine bay and at each wheel caliper and everywhere is dry!
I'll try bleeding them tonight just in case any air got in there somehow..I hope this fixes it.
Any input is greatly appreciated...especially since braking is kinda important!

lol okay it seems like we've determined a general problem that should result in an Integra recall lol. The same thing happens in my teg (150,000 miles), but it only happens sometimes. I haven't been able to Isolate any one specific set of circumstances(i.e. heat) that cause this to happen. It scares the crap out of me though when I'm braking for an intersection and all of a sudden my brakes lose pressure !

Yes...I agree that it's not fun to "guess" whether or not your brakes are going to work or not. I'm gonna bleed mine tonight and hope this fixes it. If not it looks like a new MC for me!

Look at your master Cylinder closely. If you see it a little moist then It's allready picking out it's lot and coffin...

Update:
I checked my brakes the other night and found that my driver rear bleeder valve had traces of brake fluid inside the rubber protective cover. (I have speedbleeders installed) I tightened the valve a little bit (didn't want to break it off), dried up the fluid and replaced the cap. My brakes haven't failed since [knocks] wood [/knocks]
I'm still not convinced though.....if fluid was leaking out of my speedbleeder valve when I braked, wouldn't the pressure shoot the little rubber cap off? This has been the only "smoking gun" that I have found. My MC is dry as a bone and my fluid levels are perfect.
I guess I'll just have to wait and see if that fixed it. I'm going to check that valve again tonight to see if any fluid has returned. If it has, it may be a faulty SpeedBleeder valve.
peace..........................

This happened to my wife's G2. Wound up in her case being the seals on the Master Cylinder. If you have the same trouble, and can get replacement seals, you can save a bunch of $$$.

Good tip
I hope it doesn't get that far though...I'm hoping I fixed it with a little torque on that valve.

That sounds classic - master cylinder. Mine never leaked out, & mine never did any leaking at the caliper bleed screws. Mine also started happening after I switched from Castrol LMA to Valvoline SynPower. Switching back & flushing seemed to fix mine at first, but it came back. I got a new MC because I couldn't find a seal kit.
FYI...
All cars have brake 'slave' cylinders. They're built into the calipers. People just don't call 'em slaves. The wheel cylinder for a drum brake 'looks' mroe like a slave cylinder.
The brake booster wouldn't do this. It just 'helps' you push harder on the master cylinder.
And if it were leaking out thru the bleed valve it would blow off the rubber cap. Plus your reservoir level would go down from the lost fluid.

ay homie.. i have a 91 teg and i was rollin down the street one day with my homie.. and i was goin about 55 in a 40 zone.. then all the sudden, i go to stop and the pedal felt like it had some pressure.. but when i would hold the break down to stop, it would loose pressure.. i was gettin freaked out and had to use the E-break to stop.. took it to my uncles shop and found out that the master was going out. i guess there is rubber fittings inside there that hold pressure when you press on the break, and thoes finally wore out. the master costed 150 but i gota hook up for 50 bucks..
but for the masters.. it should cost around 150 for non ABS and about 200 and up for ABS systems..
hope this helps you
Thanks for the info...
So far so good...after re-torqueing that bleeder valve and topping off the fluid, the problem has not returned. I'm still going to be leary for awhile...and not get myself into any sticky situations. Just in case they fail. We all know that these things only happen at the worst times!

It's baaaaack and this time it's back with a vengence!
It hadn't happened in almost a week...and all of a sudden, yesterday, it started again. It seems to only do it when it's real hot outside and after driving for like 20-30 mins. I guess I'll have to get a new MC or seal kit. I'm going to try the seal kit...The Honda cross-referenced part was only $4.90. I'll try that first.
Also...if it does get down to needing an MC, should I buy a used one or just spend the money on a new one? My thoughts are that, since brakes are pretty important, I should just buy a new one.
Vtechie....I'm gonna drop ya an IM...I'm interested in knowing how dificult it was changing out that seal.
Wish me luck...

Yeah.
If you get the seal kit, make sure you inspect the surface inside the MC real good. Sometimes when they do this, it's not the seals that are bad. It's the bore of the cylinder.
