Default Those of you not running balance shafts!

Is it necessary to run the balance shaft pulley on the crank once the timing belt is tensioned?

I'm in the process of tensioning my H22 right now w/o any balance shaft belt on or anything.

Another thing as well....

The adjuster bolt that is a part of the tensioner, it's about 3" in long, is this necessary as well while tensioning the belt?

TIA.

Yes,you need that pulley or gear or else your timiing belt will slip off.Unless you can have someone turn down the gear and leave only the small part that spaces out the crank shaft pulley and timing belt lower gear,You will definitely need it.

Today I have done installation of the T-belt and balancer belt on my H22. I tried also engine running without the balancer belt. I don't recomend it to anybody. The engine without the balancer belt makes enough vibrations that you can feel over all the rpm band. I assume that bearings will not last long time with this mod.

Ya, I saw that lol. I put it back on and it ran just fine.

As for the removal of the balance shafts, it does vibrate more, but isn't bad.

I'll have to see how long it lasts me, but I'm willing to take the chances.

I'll do a review in the Hybrid forum here soon...

makes sense. Just like an unbalanced wheel will kill the bearings in those regions a LOT faster than a balanced one

Actually, that has to do only if the crankshaft was not balanced correctly. The balancer shafts are for secondary vibrations that are just natural for a big 4 cylinder.IF you do a search on the internet for four cylinder secondary vibrations,im sure youll find sites talking about the shafts just canceling out the vibrations that are natural for a big four cylinder. They are just there for comfort.None of the pages i have seen mention anything about reliability.

I've been driving around on mine w/o balance shaft belt since I made the thread, raced and still no issues. Guess we'll find out

Ive been without them too for the last 3000 miles, but i still have to do an oil change to see if any unusual metal has formed......

so what are the gains from not putting on the balance belt?

It's some fairly large gains across the entire RPM band...likely 8-10 whp

I don't think we've seen any real proof of that . . . .

I wish I could find the freakin dyno I saw of this. Without the belt x car gained like 2 whp or something really lame. When I had my belt off, it for SURE wasn't no 8-10 whp.

However much it did gain, it wasn't worth the sensation that my car was about to fall apart.

That's interesting.

I'm always curious about the whole hp gain across the board claim. That doesn't make much sense, as in order to gain a constant amount of hp throughout the entire rpm band, it means you're gaining more torque in the lower rpms than you are on the top. I can't imagine how reducing engine inertia would accomplish that.

Given that dropping 10 pounds from an 18 pound flywheel won't really show up as a gain on the dyno (at least in higher gears), I have a hard time seeing how balance shafts with far less rotational inertia than a flywheel will be much of an improvement.

Actually, the removal of the balance shaft belt, I have noticed the motor revs a lot faster.

This combined with a lightened flywheel will make it rev up and down very much faster; and even though it may not show HP increase on the dyno, it will still improve 1/4 time and such from going thru the power band faster.

so should i just remove my belt as well? its already missing teeth and i dont know why. i'm pretty sure the balance shafts are making a ticking noise as well. i have yet to find that out.

umm, you may want to check your valve clearances.
