Default compression ratio: how high is too high??

i was just thinking about this the other day. ive seen people on here who say their CR's are 12.0:1 and above on their street car. to me that seems too high for a daily driver. i think anywhere between 11.0-12.0 would be good enough for me. how do you guys with 12.0 and higher get around, what kind of fuel do you use, etc.??

93 octane and good tuning.

my friend runs 12.5:1 on 92 octane, tuned on Hondata, 30 mpg highway, 220 whp, 12.6 1/4 mile in an all metal GSR

edit- he tried 13:1 with 92 octane, and ended up pulling so much timing, the power to the ground was the same as 12.5:1

i got 12.0:1 CR and im on 91 octane. my timing is at 12 and its tuned with vafc. make sure u have all
the proper fuel accesories like pump, fpr... rail and injectors arent as important

with Hondata your timing could be at 16...gain a lot of power

really??? hmmmm. i was ganna get a thicker head gasket and run more timing, but a hondata sounds better

sell your VAFC for 225 or so, and you're more than 1/2 way to s200 with launch control, full throttle shifts and data logging. Find smeone that can tune good, and you'll see FAR better results than a VAFC

well i got a built ls/vtec with a fully done up p&p and milled head with itr cams, gsr crank and ctr pistons. all the bolt ons and i dynoed at 204 whp and 141 tq. not bad but id like to see better with bigger cams

im really thinking of selling it and working towards an i-vtec swap. maybe just a k24 for now to get started.

im a noob with compression? I plan on puttin on ctr pistons and jun 3 cams. I think ctr are 12:1 compression on a gsr motor but what does that mean? I think the higher the more power i assume. But what does the 12 represent and what does the 1? Please enlighten me. Thanks

Basicly with more compression you make more power.

I have heard 1 cr up equals about 10hp...not sure on that though.

12:1 for example: like squeezing 12 oranges down to the size of 1.
10.4:1 for example: squeezing 10.4 oranges to the size of 1.
it will always end in :1
the more you squeeze the air in the cylinder to, the bigger explotion u get. more power

So basically higher compression pistions allow more air in the chambers and make it push up and down harder making more power. think i get it. Thanks alot

wow, i didnt think a VAFC could be tuned that well for 12:1. maybe im just over-estimating everything.

with compression ratio's, the 1 represents the volume in the combustion chamber at TDC, and the 12, or 10.2, or whatever number comes before the 1 represents the volume at BDC. so with a 12:1 compression ratio, the volume is 12x larger at BDC than the volume at TDC. thats why its called "compression" ratio because the 12 is compressed into 1. so to my understanding its not necissarilly more air in the combustion chamber, its more air per cubic inch. basically its just more volume is compressed into less volume. im probably wrong, but thats how it was explained to me.

haha, its 1 am, im too tired to care about engine terminology right now.

so whatever the term is when the piston is at the lowest point of the stroke is what BDC means??
