Default Oil question for h22a1's..........

What is hondas recomended oil type for a h22a1? Is synthetic oil a bad idea? Does it burn up quicker? how do you go from synthetic oil to regular oil? Do a synthetic blend for 3500 miles, change the oil and then go with non-synthetic oil at all, or is it bad to change the oil type? My prelde is acting funny, kinda like the oil is to thick or something, and it isnt circulating. And to be honest, i thought i'd been losing oil because near the time for my next oil change my vtec doesnt kick as hard or at all, and the dipstick reads kind-a low. there is no dripping/leaking, because i park in my garage. ( I have had balance shaft seals replaced along with balance shafts, oil pump, timing belt and all those things ) and there isnt a **** load of smoke coming out the back! So, where could the oil go? How much oil gets burned in a 3500 miles ( between regular oil changes ) if i drive my car semi-hard ( like a prelude should be drivin, but nothing rediculous ) And answers to the oil questions in the beginning?

First off how many miles does your car have> second off you should change your oil no more than every 3000 miles if you are driving like you said and using petroleum oil or Synthetic blend. Preludes burn a little oil and to burn a quart in 3500 miles is easily done with out seeing a bit of noticable smoke coming out

the car has 116,700 miles, and she still runs strong as hell. Today, when the car was just acting wierd when the vtec didnt hit it was in first, with the ac on full blast and just didnt kick very hard. And i have heard from mechanics, that oil doesnt fuly break "down" or complaete its job at 3,000 miles. Especially Full synthetic oil. My question was asking wether or not it is good to use synthetic, or whatever oil came in it from honda? And if i am using synthetic oil, is it necessary to baby it off of synthetic with a round of synthetic blend ( half syn./ half regular )? Or can you just switch freely at each oil chanhge? thanx

CHECK YOUR OIL LEVEL BEFORE YOU DRIVE ANOTHER INCH

if VTEC isn't engaging properly, or its engaging late, it is very likely you are dangerously low on oil. My first H22 blew up that way.

I was racing a type R on a saturday night, and noticed VTEC was acting funny. Next morning, I was driving my then-G/F home, and the motor locked up... no oil.

it did not blow smoke, and it did not leak anything where I parked.

the oil pressure light does not come on until you reach 4psi, which is long after you after fux0red.

When i was Suggesting to change your oil at 3000 miles that was for petroleum oil not synthetic synthetic oil can last for at least 5000 miles. As far as not breaking down all the way at 3000 miles i believe most people like to change there oil before it completely breaks down>> moving on you do not have baby the oil over to synthetic. The catch with switching over to synthetic on a higer milege veichle is that petroleum oil has wax in the oil. When you switch to synthetic you will loosen up all the wax deposits resulting in possible oil leaks that you did not think you have. this is also due to the fact that synthetic oil is also thinner in nature.

Hello there, I'm a "newb", and this is my very first post . I have gone to this site almost every day for the last 6 months or so and finally registered today. So thanks in advance for having me.

So on to the Oil Issue...

I have a 94VTEC w/ 145,xxx miles and it seems to go through oil like a ***** (very FAST). For example in less than 2,000mi I have added 2 quarts of oil and the oil still looks LOW (we're talkin' 1/4 or 1/2 of an inch up the dipstick well below the first notch/line).

Now the same thing happened before my last oil change and I know it was low because taking a corner fast I got the oil light flash for a split second AND VTEC Hesitated - now here less than 2000 miles into this oil and its doing the same thing.

I'm running Mobil 1 Synthetic 10w-30 w/Mobil 1 filter.

The preivous owner ran the same oil for 1.5 yrs that he had it and ran a 14.7 (I/H/E) at the track a year or so ago and it still pulls hard as far as I can tell (eventhough I havent run it yet). I dont notice any leaks or excessive smoke but this seems a bit abnormal.

I am goin to try switching to AMSOIL (prob. 5w-30) this weekeng + see if it help at all - if not what else can I do - should I visit the Honda dealer so they can rape my wallet?

THANKS!!

I would not go to honda from what i have heard from others is honda will tell you this is a normal thing and charge you sixty dollars. Switching to amsoil probably will not fix the problem but it won't hurt to try. What i would do is to Check your oil level at each fill up and add accordingly. If you are getting oil lights you are sending your car into an early grave.

Yeah, when the oil light flashes my stomach drops...I will prob just have to watch the oil closely all the time + add oil every 1000+ miles and then just do oil changes when the filter is due to go.

Hopefully the AMSOIL will help some. I'm gonna use there engine flush too see if it does anything.

Engine flush will help your engine run smoother if there is a lot of broken down oil built up in your engine. A good way to tell if you need a engine flush is to change your oil and look at the dip stick if the oil is dark like you never changed it then you probably need an engine flush if it is a honey color like oil is then you probably won't benifit from an engine flush but it won't hurt either

Well, i went and got my oil changed at Stupid-Lube and they tell me i am done. So i pay out and am going to get into my car, when i notice that the mechanic only had 4 quarts sittin around. So i asked him to check the oil, told him i was real sketchy about there not being enough oil. So he checked it and it was about a quart low! I asked him if he realized that the oil filter ( if changed, whch they did ) also held another 3/4 quarts or so extra. He was all cool about it and filled it up the rest of the way. But what had i driven outta there hallin *** with almost a whole quart short of oil? Damn, only goes to show, ou gotta watch these bastards. I oughtt ajust do it myself! N-e-ways. For all you guys that have oil presuure guages in there car, if the needle starts to float and bounce around, you DO NOT have enough oil in yo' car!!!!!!
peace

yea i used to work at and express lube shop and for the most part none of the employees had finished high school. I have seen everything from starting an engine with no oil to putting windshield washer fluid in the radiator. I do not trust any body and try to do as much as possible on my own
