I'm not sure how essential it is to check the preload when you replace the diff assy (ask ***** or rodney), but it's recommended that you check/adjust the preload when you replace the diff assy.

If the preload is beyond spec, then you need to adjust the differential shim thicknesses. Make sure the dealership is open or that you can have down time with the car to get the appropriate sized shims. Or, maybe rodney has some laying around.

You might also consider replacing the diff bearings since you're gonna have to mess with the preload anyways.

I was told by a reputable source that the shims are needed only for after market LSD units.

 

ive replaced mine, brand new from the dealer and im loving it.

 

Maybe that's true, but the manual says you need to check and possibly adjust as well when you replace the diff or certain items centering around the diff.
