Hood wont pop...any ideas?
My Hood on my 88 CRX Si wont pop. I took off the hood pop lever last week to run some rca's and remote wire then after i put it back on it gave me trouble, and now it just wont pop at all. Although I have no clue what i did that would make the hood not pop. Theres only one way that lever will go back in and thats how i put it back, so im not sure what the problem is.
Is there any way to get the hood open without that lever?
Im going to go play around with it now...see if i cant figure out wtf is going on.
Thanks, Eric

i'm sure there are better ways but on my old crx i just took a pair of plyers and pulled on the wire inside the cabin and pulled until it popped open. reason hood isn't opening is because the tension is gone from the cable ... i have had 3 crx's and 1 civic now and all 4 are the same way.
The tension should never go away entirely. An easier way to pop the hood is to have someone push down on the hood while you pop it from inside.
The likely culprit is a broken plastic endpiece on either end of the cable. The only thing to do in that case is to pull the cable and replace it.
I had this exact same problem and I used to use the pliers too

Funny you say that because I think I know like 4 ppl that do that same thing. Hey, it works...

make that 5, lol.
my hood isnt working too great either, no idea why. it's been happening ever since i took my hood off and put it back on(while putting engine in). i dunno if maybe my hinges didnt line up perfectly, but I didnt do anything to the cable.

My .02 cents
I pull the hood lever up, jamb the honda lug wrench between it and the floor. Walk to front of car, punch down over latch. Voila.

haha, before i was able to just hold the latch and punch the hood. (it still wouldnt pop if i did that before). I had to use a pair of vice grips, locked them onto the lever, then attach a clothes hanger to it, with the door open walk to the side of the hood, pull up on the hanger and push down on the hood. I've got to say, it did work every time, even though it was pretty ghetto. Now i just punch it
I should really fix it

I just grab the cable from the inside of the car and pull it to one side really hard to take up the tension while pulling the lever. My first gen. and both my 2G's have all done the same thing.
How hard is it to install a new cable?
Anyone done this before?

I finally got it to pop yesterday by just pulling up the lever....its like a 1 in a million chance
I was also wondering where that cable actually ran too? I was looking where the latch was on the hood and i didnt see a cable anywhere.

It runs along the frame rail right behind the fender goes up goes onto your winshield washer bottle (only like clips on) then it goes to the front makes like a little loop into the release mechanism.
I might just replace mine before I put my car back together so I dont have to mess with it later.

mine wouldn't open one time, and I have the cable in the bracket but I had forgot to put the cable in the little clip before the bracket to keep the tension on the cable.

mine does it too, but it's hard to open sometimes. eh, oh well if i can still get it to work everytime with a little help there is no point in spending money on it! lol
Yes, after years the cable can develop slack or like mentioned earlier, the plastic clips on the ends break, thus causing some of the slack.
The last CRX customer that came in for a swap, I had a hard time getting it to latch SHUT!!! After many numerous times of re-opening and slamming, and spraying LUBE on the latch mechanism on the core support....it finally latched and now works great.
Remember, it could be the cable, or the latch mechanism itself. Wipe the dirt off and lube it well. Just keep opening/closing, lubing, repeat as necessary.

my hood got fucked up by some dumbass bitch who cant park. it was at night, in front of my own house, it pushed my hood, radiator support, radiator, and radiator fan toward my engine. my radiator fan touches the header, so when it goes off it makes a clicking noise that is really annoying. and also my headlights are all crooked
