Mike, to answer your question for everyone, the same Quaife is used in the 5 speed and the 6 speed trannys. No difference

Same basic thing - ive always considered LSD's to have some type of mechanical interlock to make them truely limited - where as a Viscous Slip Diff uses fluid to accomplish the same thing.

You can trust Earl. If you don't believe me, go to the forced induction forum and ask around. He'll get nothing but

Thanks, I realize no one knows me in this forum but I am a moderator on H-T as well as an authorized Quaife and PWR dealer. Just trying to give a heads up to those that have been waiting for the release of the Quaife.

quaife lsd for the si....what would that do to my 60 ft times? i run typical 2.33 etc right now. Would the extra traction really make that much of a difference?

you'd be surprised what fluid can do. look at a torque converter on an auto transmission.

heh. yeah, what's up ceas? i figured you would know that a quaife is helical, that's what quaife built their reputation on!

as to why someone would prefer a vLSD, it has to do with how smoothly it transfers torque. a lot of car makers put vLSD's in their front drive cars b/c there is no clicking or popping or sudden jerking of the wheel that is sometime associated with the more responsive clutch & gear type diffs.

to me, vLSD's aren't worth the money unless they're ~250-300 bucks.

OK, this thread kept irritating me, so I dug up a diawing of the Quaife type differential.

It is definitely a helical gearset, Torsen type axle, not viscous.

I don't know where Ceas got that information, as he is normally reliable and doesn't open his mouth unless he knows what's going on.

I'm also puzzled why the frequently posting board members let this go as far as it did without pointing out that the Quaife is not a viscous axle.

As to which is better, viscous or helical gear, the helical gear will normally enjoy a clear advantage.

You can get into a good argument for preferring a clutch-type over a gear-type, but I cannot understand why anyone would prefer a fluid-type when the other two are readily available.</TD></TR></TABLE> george i felt the same way u did but why bother arguing. u know how it is, everybody BUT u is right. http://www.howstuffworks.com

Not everyone is right, I most certainly was wrong on this one. I am not sure what was happening in my head that day - especially because I have a quaife in my current automobile.. Anyways, you gents certainly are correct, and it is a great product - it works wonders in helping me put down my 130ish hp to the rear wheels (dont laugh)

(edit - I was looking at new cars with the wife and I believe one or two had VSD's - I was explaining to her how they work sometime that day and I believe that is where the confusion came in)
