Cheap way to hit 13s with GS-R motor......

There is a crew of hatchbacks that come down to the Philly races every weekend, and pretty much smoke everything down there. One of them smoked a 2003 M3 before my very own eyes. last week I asked one of the guys what the hell they were running that made them so damn quick. And he told me that They were all (about 5 hatchbacks in total) running GS-R motors, with chipped P72s, and skunk spring and retainers, to be able to withstand the increased rev limit.....and thats it !
Now I understand that probably the only reason why they hit high 13s with this combo, is because these were actually C1/hatchback hybrids, but if this combination can net those times in a hatchback, it should be able to rip low 14 second passes in an actual GS-R. Now these guys never popped their hood for me to see if this was actually true, which is why I'm bringing the subject to the Honda Gods lol. How does this sound to you guys ? Those of you you have had experience with chipped P72s, is this really feasible ? Have you heard of anyone doing this before ?

a chipped p72 can only help so much. i dont buy that bullshit of only chipped p72 and thats it for a gsr hatch to beat a M3. without the modds a chipped ecu is useless. raising the redline can only help a car that is equipped with the cams that can make power beyond the 8K mark. stock gsr cams stop makin power about 7600k if my not mistakin.

ok....well they definetely aren't running turbo or sc, so these guys are most likely probably just running juice, and they use that p72 story as a coverup........ I figured as much.....
If they pop their hoods, check for nitrous lines. They may have some hidden setup, but you can still look.
E46's run low 13's, so they either went up against a bad driver or have something else up their sleeves. I dont buy it either...if you do springs and retainers, you wouldnt do any other work while youre there IE Cams?

Thats the thing though.. These guys do not have that much money, so what ever they're runnig, I'm 100 % sure its not some elaborate/expensive setup.
Could a p72 + cams + springs and retainers + GS-R motor in an EG civic + exhaust + intake = low 13 second passes ?

Also keep in mind, street races dont tell the tale of whether a car is fast or not. For all we know the M3 could have some problem that is hindering its performance. Or maybe he didnt get his launch down and bogged horribly, and in reality he ran a low 14. Maybe he shifted super slow or just cant drive...street races cant be used to compare cars unless you know both cars 100% inside and out. And thats not the case here.
Did they have an AFC or any sort of piggyback to control fuel? I bet there's at least ITR cams in there, regardless of the race, just based on someone going to that trouble and not replacing cams probably not happening.

I looked inside a few of the cars, and I didn't see any type of engine management or v-afc of any sort. Like I said...these guys dont seem like they have that much money to play with, which is why it's kinda weird.
I think a GS-R motor with a built head (cams, valvetrain) along with I/H/E could be good for low 13's in a gutted EG. The only problem is that the stock GS-R rods tend to stretch at high RPMs, so they could have done ITR rods/pistons or something else...

Well they definitly have more than a chipped ECU, if they are running a built head, w/ IHE they could run 13 for sure. I have seen GSR's in hatch's w/ less mods run 13's. A gutted hatch only needs about 180+whp to run low 13's.
they can always say its a GSR motor, you could probably even look at the engine block and it might say b18c1. but it might be hiding a little 2.0L secret or some compression. im sure theyre not about to tell you all about their set up. my buddy used to always say he had "stock motor" in his hatch. granted it was an ITR, but it was stock. theyre probably just sayin a GSR to get you off their back.
yea, you need to mention tires too. A hatch with a gsr motor basically stock with mild weight reduction on slicks can get 14.0 all day long...

it could be the 5 finger discount..
plus nos
that leave a very distinctive smell when it burns..

sound like nos... cauz stock GSR pushing it are around 160hp.. some of the guys might be right.. they dont seem to have much money but skunk2 intake manifold, throttle body, good drvining skillz, it might run around 180hp with exhaust and intake, upgrade fuel injector, modded p72 problaly wont help jack ****.. they're many guesses.. but for quick light EG a source of laughin gas is a must.. but street racer dont share their setups.. so just have to be like them foo in fast and furious climb into their garage and peek
probably not telling the full truth. b18C5 powered hatchbacks run on average around 13's on street tires. The 2003 m3 bone stock is deep in 13's. My guess if they really beat the m3 on a fair race, with both competent drivers is that their motor is mildly built.
Mildly built hatchbacks can be quite fast:
GSR motor with CTR pistons, and lumpy cams, Plus other bolts on: Not that unussual to hear they run 12's.

I've seen B18C5 EG's run low 13's with minor bolt ons. It's not that hard for a stripped hatch to run 13's on a GSR motor with some high comp. pistons and high lift cams. A lot of hatch people don't like talking about their setups if it's all motor. Too many thieves out there.
